Cheney warns of 'single day of horror'
Vice President Dick Cheney today said terrorists are "doing everything they can" to get weapons of mass destruction that could kill hundreds of thousands of Americans "in a single day of horror." His comments came in the latest in a series of speeches top administration officials are giving in hopes of curbing criticism over the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

I am getting a distinct "cry wolf" complex here...

65. Just how does the rest of the World escape this terror without
Cheney at control. I don't see Norway, Switzerland or Canada arming themselves to the teeth. Why aren't they targets?

Why do we have to be so much safer than the rest of the World?

Everytime Bush* and Cheney open their mouths we become bigger targets. Go figure!

2. Is that a promise or a threat?
"The next attack is coming," said Cheney to his men.
"And if it doesn't, we can make one happen again.
Every war we've ever been in, was started with a lie,
And this war's good business, so today's the day for you to die."

Gee, dick, they COULD be on the moon enjoying the green cheese, too. We COULD be on the verge of invasion by tse-tse flies. Petroleum COULD start spewing out of the White House toilets. YOU COULD start telling the truth for a change. But none of that will happen, either.

Looted from all those unprotected Iraqi nuclear energy plants. There are enough jugs of uranium slurry to make a hefty parcel of dirty bombs.

If one goes off - who do I blame? Bush and his incompetent crew, of course, for getting us into this mess.

11. As so well pointed out by Michael Moore (and me in many previous posts)
You are more likely to die of the following than a terrorist attack:
1.) Cancer
2.) AIDS
3.) Heart Disease
4.) Car Accident
5.) Gun Accident
6.) Lightning
7.) Suicide

When it is more likely that a terrorist will kill me than me killing me, then...maybe I'll start to be scared by terrorists. Until then, I'll just be frightened by the loss of civil liberties, the jailing of our population and the death of our democracy.

93. And in the week after 9/11
an acquaintance of mine, healthy and athletic, died of a blood clot after routine knee surgery.

That put it all into perspective. While I don't care to die in a terrorist attack, there are so many other ways to die, and one thing you learn as you grow older is that anything can happen to anyone, so I'm not going to let fear of terrorism (or the fear of crime) turn me stupid.

12. Yep. And Cheney brought that day closer.
He and the Bushies have made America more vulnerable and more hated while committing the majority of our Army to occupy a country that was no threat. We have around 135,000 troops in Iraq doing nothing but trying to make Iraq secure. We are spending $160 billion that could have gone to world-wide and homeland anti-terrorist infrastructure.

Cheney is an ass. He fought yesterday's type of war against yesterday's enemy. Osama Bin Laden et al are today's threat, and that threat is now far stronger than when the Bushies took over the White House.

33. Precisely. Playing the fear card relentlessly.
Its the only one left in their empty deck. Actually thanks to Dickies relentless pursuit of PNAC we have spawned a brand spanking new terror breeding ground in Iraq which did not exist before. Thus Dickie and the boys have created that precise type of "gathering threat" which he is beating the drums of panic over. Sorry Dickie it won't work this time. People are waking up to the true ambitions of you and your cronies.

38. I thought Clark did an excellent job of pointing this out last night.
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 01:44 PM by VolcanoJen
He didn't seem to get any press for it, or many kudos from DUers, but when he insisted that the policies of the Bush Administration have caused Iran and North Korea to ramp up their nuclear programs, he was spot on.

We've really, really got to carry this message to the voters. Bush's policies have damaged national security. We're less safe now than we were on September 10th, 2001. This is a key argument to counter their constant fear-mongering, and I think it would behoove us if our candidates really started stressing this.

45. Exactly right.
As Clark and others have noted, far from making us safer they have instead produced the contrary result. Triggering a new nuclear arms race by countries who don't want to be preemptively attacked, providing a fertile recruitment tool for new fanatics with an unnecessary and costly war and worst of all alienating our long standing allies and the people's of the world whose cooperation is indispensable in thwarting the crime of terrorism.

67. They will make damn sure there is another day of horror
The trend of Bush's approval ratings becomes so clear when graphed out:

Look what happens whenever a massive amount of blood is spilled. September 11, followed by the invasion of Iraq... If the pattern remains consistent it will spike again just before the election. Don't you think the PNAC cabal will do anything in their power to keep the pattern on track?

Dick is just giving us a heads up. Thanks, Dick!

19. This irresponsible fear-mongering has to stop
I can't believe there is no one who will call out this administration out on their blantant fear-mongering. Ok, its not fair to say that no one is doing so, but they really need to be shamed into stopping this bullshit. And while we're at it, we might count the ways in which, in a very short period of time, the ineptness of this administration has exponentially increased the numbers of Al Queda and other terrorist organizations that would liek to blot the US of the map. Oh, and how about how our arrogance and seemingly unwilliginess to provide security in Iraq allowed all those WMD to run off in the hands of terrorists?

As mkregel alluded to in the initial post, there's an element of crying wolf here.

This whole new propaganda blitz to "re-sell" the war to the American public resonates with fewer people every day.

I say we're better off every day in the thirteen months leading up to the election that they keep up this line of BS because by October, 2004 not many will believe this anymore, unless Cheney carries out his threat.

For all their idiotic "macho" talk, the Bush Administration is hell-bent on turning America into a nation of quivering, spineless poltroons who run and hide under the bed ("duct tape") as soon as one of their ridiculous fear-mongers mumbles the magical and meaningless word "terrorist."

39. In a sick sort of way, this is good news
ChimpCo has already made it clear that the "War On Terror" is going to be the centerpiece of the 2004 strategy. Why? Simple - it's all they've got, and to date, they haven't got much.

Meanwhile, as the general public's skin thickens against the constant drumbeat of "TERRA TERRA TERRA TERRA TERRA" (as demonstrated in Dickie-Boy's speech today, ChimpCo will be forced to up the ante, as they lie and lie and lie again about 9/11, Iraq, Al Qaeda and Osama. Their boys will cry "wolf!" and no one is going to give a tin shit.

Of course, their "I misspokes" will turn up the following day on Page A-22, but in continuing these bald-faced lies, they're leaving baseball bats lying around for any Democratic candidate with guts to pick up for a good old-fashioned rhetorical head-beating.

In the absence of a living, breathing Osama (unlikely) or a sudden flower-flinging festival in Iraq (due to occur at about the same time Britney Spears converts to Islam), lies and plenty of them are all they have left. And, uh, Dick? NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOU OR YOUR REPEATED, RIDICULOUS LIES!

Would osama be behind it? People would believe so automatically. And why have we not captured osama yet? And why did we curtail that effort to attack a country that was not a threat to us?

Yep, I think even the sheeple would be asking those questions. And I believe these thugs know that another attack would destroy them, so that's not the plan. The plan is just to keep us too scared to question the pigs. And I think that line has been forever crossed.

Been thinking the same thing. Another attack on this Country would sink Bush*. People would blame him for not catching OsamabinHussein. They just need to scare scare and scare again to deflect the public away from the mess they have gotten themselves and us in.

Somebody has a history o doing anything to serve his own greed.
Somebody is in a whole lotta hot water and excriment which the CIA looks to be ready to toss in the ventilating device.

TERRORISTS are "doing everything they can..." Now, ANYONE who was paying any attention at all on this board had to have read Stephanie's NUMEROUS threads detailing how the *gang who can't shoot straight (but have lots of lucrative back room deals in Havana-cigar-smoke-filled rooms going) COMPLETLY and DELIBERATELY left nuclear materials unsecured at Tuwaitha while zealously guarding the oil fields and their bureaucratic, ministerial backup buildings, personnel, files etc. also leaving the important artifacts of our common ancestry to be ravaged... GEEZ, EP, WHAT A FUCKING SET-UP!!! What galls me is it is SO TRANSPARENT!

So now they got steroid boy in CA. Hmmm... could signal a bit of protection (off-shore, of course). WHO is expendable now? Eugene, OR??? Just asking.

78. As much as I despise the piece of shit (and everyone in his cabal of evil)
he is probably right. There are plenty of people on the left as well as the wrong ("right") who have admitted the liklihood of some kind of further 'terrorist' attack. Gary Hart has made that claim and he's no wingnut.

Now, whether or not it would occur via LIHOP, MIHOP or simply "out of the blue" probably wouldn't matter (unless one of the first 2 scenarios could be proven) - the upshot is of course what ultimately matters, and I cannot predict what it would be. Many people would 'blame' Shrubco in any case for not preventing it. Given the short shrift given to "homeland security" (what a fukin' joke) it could be a logical conclusion, depending on the nature of the incident.

Few people on the planet are ignorant of how vulnerable our ports and adjacent cities are. Millions of containers arrive every year, a tiny percentage are examined. The border with Canada is over 4000 miles long and impossible to monitor...the southern one is almost as porous in many places and of course there are people ALREADY here who are potential
perpetrators.

But of course it could have a galvanizing effect on Shrub's pResidency. He can say "we told you so." How much the ultimate failure to derail the plot will negatively affect him is a future I can't predict.

Chimpy said "I have no idea" the other day; a moment of rare if unintentional candor. At this point I can only say "neither do I"

92. then why did they OUT wilson's WIFE - the CIA OPERATIVE working on WMD?
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 09:13 PM by bpilgrim

TREASON

The agent in question, Valerie Plame, has been a CIA operative for almost 20 years, recruiting and running undercover agents overseas to gather intelligence on the spread of weapons of mass destruction. That is a critically important line of work, so important that certain nations have even been known to go to war over WMD.

So how did Plame become the target of "two senior administration officials," who exposed her identity to columnist Bob Novak and other Washington reporters?

http://www.ajc.com/opinion/content/opinion/1003/10cia.html;COXnetJSessionID=1Hml9LUd4VA6cRGYTAhB45hq7lGIoV4HeEnWIG8VX1v5FPyRk9Cx!-279304938?urac=n&urvf=10658381171260.618449565474919

Did senior Bush officials blow the cover of a US intelligence officer working covertly in a field of vital importance to national security--and break the law--in order to strike at a Bush administration critic and intimidate others?

It sure looks that way, if conservative journalist Bob Novak can be trusted.

99. WAIT PEOPLE! Don't you know?!?!?!
We must be afraid! We must be VERY afraid so we won't think about the crime of outing a CIA operative that could possibly make the BushCo house of cards come tumbling down!!! Pay Attention!!!! We must not worry over the current administration's crimes, and must focus on the possible demise of our own desparate lives. We MUST continue to subject ourselves to being held hostage to fear!!!!!!!

</sarcasm>

When in the hell is the media going to openly criticize that what was stated in October of last year, what was stated in Bush's speeches from February - March of this year are words that these thugs need to be accountable for in the actions taken that were illegal!! Liars! All of them!

Also, this article, as many of the media whores are still doing, references and uses inferences to associate terrorists, Sept.11 and Iraq as being all one package deal.
