Governor Jeb Bush's approval ratings hold despite Schiavo case

Tallahassee, Florida- By nearly a two to one margin, Florida voters say they disagree with Governor Jeb Bush's order to investigate whether Michael Schiavo delayed calling nine-one-one
when his wife collapsed in 1990.

However, 49 percent of the more than 12-hundred Florida voters surveyed by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute approved of Bush's overall job performance as governor.

But more than two-thirds say he shouldn't run for president in 2008.

Bush was out of step with most voters on the Terri Schiavo case.

Nearly half said they agreed strongly and another 12 percent agreed somewhat with the decision to remove the woman's feeding tube. Twenty-four percent disagreed strongly.

...avoidance by implementing the hurricane deductible rider and calling the entire state of Florida a hurricane disaster area even before the first one Charlie ever made landfall. That automatically made any claim regardless of whatever weather damage anyone in the state had, subject to the substantially higher deductibles (2% to 7% of th insured value) rather than the standard deductibles for wind and water damage.

Jeb has allowed all insurance companies to raise premiums and also put in place bureaucratic loopholes and stop points that have denied hundreds of thousands of property owners full access to the claims they could have with insurance companies by allowing depreciation on damaged parts of homes and businesses.

Lastly, any areas (Orlando/Central Florida) which were hit with multiple hurricanes were forced to have up to triple deductions on the damages and Bush backed that even though the hurricanes were within 6 six weeks of one another. Jebs popularity numbers in many sections of Florida are fiction at best!

The first lady declined to comment on the trip, but Alia Faraj, the governor's communications director, said the trip helped build economic, cultural and social ties between Japan and Florida.

The governor's office said the trip cost almost $13,000 for Bush, Campbell and Butler. Three state security agents also accompanied Bush, the sister- in-law of the president.

Citing security concerns, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement declined to say how much it cost the state to provide security.

Officials with Enterprise Florida, a quasi-state agency that promotes economic development, said it may be years before the trip pays off economically for Florida, but they expressed confidence it will.

Ben Wilcox, executive director of Common Cause Florida, a watchdog group, said details of the trip, especially the inclusion of the chef, raise questions about whether taxpayers' money was used wisely. ``It kind of points out the fact that you can basically justify anything to go on a free trip to a far and exotic land.''

Wilcox said he also was curious why the governor's office did not post any information about the trip on the governor's Web site, which details minutia of his wife's activities.

``You would hope there would be some explanation of the trip and what the state gained from it,'' Wilcox said.

Seventy percent of the respondents, including a majority of Republicans with an opinion, said they do not want to see Bush try to succeed his brother.



Voters also gave the Legislature a 42-40 percent favorable for its handling of business during the recent session, much of it dominated by the Schiavo case.

President Bush received an unfavorable rating with 51 percent saying they did not approve of how he was handling his job compared to 45 percent who supported the second term president.

Florida voters were opposed by a 51 percent to 39 percent to Bush's push to invest a portion of their Social Security taxes in the stock market, although Republicans favored it by nearly 2-1 while Democrats and independents strongly opposed it.
