Leno said to exceed Terminator limits
Jay Leno is biting back at critics who claim he's become the late-night cuddle-toy of Arnold Schwarzenegger and President Bush.

Political and media analysts yesterday took shots at the lantern-jawed comic - contending that Leno helped elect Schwarzenegger as California's governor by putting him on "The Tonight Show."

...But Leno spokesman Bruce Bobbins insisted yesterday that the comedian never endorsed the Terminator.

"They're just longtime friends," Bobbins told us after speaking with Leno. "He never had Arnold on during the campaign. He also booked Gray Davis as a guest. " Bobbins also denied that Leno was leaning right to score more bucks as an emcee.

4. and it had an immediate effect tonight...
leno hammered Bush perhaps out of guilt...

partial transcript:
Workers moved the liberty bell to its new permanent location. And president bush was furious when he heard there was a crack in it.

< Laughter > He said, "we will find the evildoers who did this! We will track them down!"

< Cheers and applause > And today, in a speech in new hampshire, president bush defended the war in iraq saying, "I was not about to leave the security of the american people in the hands of a madman." So I guess he's firing donald rumsfeld. Is that what's happening?

< Laughter > Oh, my god, I'm shocked. I can't believe it. And yesterday, in her speech, condoleezza rice said right up until the end, right up until the end, saddam hussein harbored ambitions to threaten the rest of the world with weapons of mass destruction. Up until the end? What end? There's no end. He still has a tv show on al jazeera, doesn't he?

< Laughter > He's got a new tape every week. Well, the latest report from the U.S. Military says they still have not found any iraqi weapons of mass destruction. However, today, they did find several iraqi women who claim they were fondled by arnold schwarzenegger in the 1970s.

< Laughter >

< Cheers and applause > And president bush called arnold yesterday to congratulate him. Arnold was very polite. He thanked bush for the economy. 'Cause let's face it, he couldn't have won without that bush economy. That helped. And during the news conference yesterday, arnold said he would ask president bush for a lot of favors. And today, the oil companies said, "hey, get in line! No cutting! We're first!"

14. Let's see if he keeps it up to the next presidential election.
I still don't trust Leno and I believe that article about him was spot on.

6. Leno? I'm not so sure.
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 05:04 AM by elperromagico
He sucked up to Arnold for the same reason most of the rest of the press did: Because Arnold brought ratings. Ratings are the bottom line (except on MSNBC); if Gary Coleman had been the big news story, the press would have followed him.

What bothers me more is the increasing likelihood that Schwarzenegger won because a few million voters thought it would be "cool" to have a movie star as governor.

9. Wasn't he at the victory party?
To me, that speaks volumes (in addition tohaving Schwarzenegger announce on his show).

7. Leno still provided "the bully pulpit" to launch the candidacy of
Schwartenegger and re-appeared after the election.

If he were not partisan, any and every candidate for governor, including Grey Davis would have been given the platform, and the hype by Leno's largess.

Trying to separate Schwartenegger and Leno is like trying to unscramble eggs. Schwartenegger won with the benefit of his celebrity and Jay Leno (and Entertainment Tonight, among other shows) were assisting all the way.

8. I don't like Leno, but I think he would have done the same if Ahnuld was..
..a democrat.

It all comes down to the cult of celebrity worship in this nation. It's really out of control.

Same for Oprah.

10. Leno lost me as a viewer
And I'm sure he doesn't care about one less viewer. He showed way too much support for Arnie for my liking. And also way too much French-bashing back when it was "cool".

He stopped being funny a long time ago.

13. He was funny?
Must've been back in the 70's... that's the last time I remember him being funny. 20 minute monologues with 30 seconds worth of jokes... that's Leno's schtick now.

He laid into Linda Tripp pretty heavy during the Lewinsky scandal though, but hey, that scumbag had it coming.

11. NBC is FOX Lite: The whole network is Republican
I think that's why they didn't want Letterman, who deserved the job. Jack Welsh didn't like his "attitude." When you finally saw Rush Limbaugh sitting -- as equals -- next to Tom Brokaw during the midterm coverage, that was the end of the "liberal media." Just look at CNBC or MSNBC, who still keeps Matthews around, despite terrible ratings, just so they can have an immediate wingnut replacement in case Russert has some kind heart attack.
