Iraq: al-Zarqawi Seen Handing Out Alms Near Syrian Border
Baghdad, 28 June (AKI) - Jordanian terror mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been seen handing out money to evacuee families in the small town of al-Karabla, near al-Qaim on the Syrian border, according to a message posted to various Islamist websites, signed by 'Muhib al-Faruq'. The message is headed "Allah is great: an urgent message from a brother from the town of al-Karabla who swears by what he says". In the message, al-Faruq says he has spoken with the "brother" from al-Karabla, who claims al-Qaeda has given some 700 dollars per household to 85 families whose houses have been destroyed in the al-Qaim area.

The "brother" also told him that "fellow mujahadeen Abu Musab" is prepared to compensate people for a mere "spilled glass of water", al-Faruq says in his message.

According to the witnesss, whose authenticity is not possible to establish, al-Qaeda has compensated civilians left homeless as a result of the recent US military operations along the Syrian border. "We have brought you this news, because the brother who we spoke to comes from the area and swears by what he says," the message ends.

2. looks like Opeartion Spear wasn't effective
so now we have Operation Sword:

BAGHDAD, June 28 (Reuters) - U.S. Marines launched a major operation in western Iraq on Tuesday, dispatching 1,000 troops against suspected insurgents in the western Euphrates river valley.

"Operation Saif (Sword) began early this morning to root out terrorists and foreign fighters living along the Euphrates River between the cities of Haditha and Hit," the Marines said in a statement.

<snip>

Earlier this month they staged Operation Spear against militants in the border town of Karabila.

Marines said they killed dozens of insurgents in that operation, but they also destroyed much of the town of 60,000 with air strikes and street-to-street battles before abandoning it at the end of the five-day operation.

4. lmao.
Now when the U.S. tries to go and capture them the poor Iraqis are going to see the U.S. as waging war on the poor and innocent. Al-Qaeda is playing the strings just perfectly, just like they did with the Soviets.

9. "According to the witness, whose authenticity is not possible to establish
Journalism is so easy.

Peoria, 28 June (AKI) - "According to a witness, whose authenticity it is not possible to establish, Elvis Presley is alive and well and teaching Zen Buddhism to a select group of adepts in Peoria/Illinois. 'We have brought you this news because the brother whom we spoke to comes from the area and swears by what he says,' the message ends."

I wonder if the Leader will mention this "news" in his address to the nation tonight. Get the popcorn and the beer in.

14. Rasputin was stabbed while giving out alms.
IIRC, it was a woman who stabbed him. He continued to press the alm into her hand.

Of course, we all know how invincible and mesmerizing Rasputin was. al-Zarqawi is taking on the same mythic proportions. Pretty good for a one-legged man who's been killed three times and recently shot in the lung.

Catapulting the propaganda, on both sides. $700 per household adds up to a lot of money. I'm willing to bet, if this story is true, that the money is coming from drug profits out of Afghanistan.

Because that would be hilarious, since he's lost all his limbs about six times now.

17. Zarqawi doesn't exist
How US fuelled myth of Zarqawi the mastermind

By Adrian Blomfield outside Fallujah
(Filed: 04/10/2004)

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the terrorist leader believed to be responsible for the abduction of Kenneth Bigley, is 'more myth than man', according to American military intelligence agents in Iraq.

Several sources said the importance of Zarqawi, blamed for many of the most spectacular acts of violence in Iraq, has been exaggerated by flawed intelligence and the Bush administration's desire to find "a villain" for the post-invasion mayhem.

US military intelligence agents in Iraq have revealed a series of botched and often tawdry dealings with unreliable sources who, in the words of one source, "told us what we wanted to hear".

"We were basically paying up to $10,000 a time to opportunists, criminals and chancers who passed off fiction and supposition about Zarqawi as cast-iron fact, making him out as the linchpin of just about every attack in Iraq," the agent said.

(Just like WMD, Zarqawi doesn't exist)
