Congress concerned over Unocal deal
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=08f5b53ff8e0fdb7

Big News Network.com Saturday 25th June, 2005 (UPI)

Several members of Congress from both parties want Treasury Secretary John W. Snow, to review of a possible sale of Unocal Corp. to a Chinese oil company.

Forty-one members of Congress sent a letter to Snow Friday to address concerns that Cnooc Ltd. oil company was using Chinese government funds to make the purchase, and that China could acquire sensitive technology, reported the Los Angeles Saturday.

Snow heads the interagency Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. The state-controlled Cnooc is China's third largest petroleum company.

I did love this quote

"it doesn't matter who controls the wells as long as oil is traded globally"

that sure didn't work for Saddam did it!!!

1. Congress can use foodstamps as well as the rest of us... they need to
"just get over it" and deal with the real problems facing Amurka, like an administration that is as criminal as it gets.

3. If China uses government funds to buy our companies so are
the companies then extensions of the Communist Chinese government? Communism is coming soon to business near you. Oh wait it is already here in Wal-Mart.

5. I thought of that too
Ironic, that China gets one of the supposed prime assets of the invasion. Everything Bush does, even the criminal stuff, turns to crap in the end.

Sorry--but the meter demanded it.

11. My first thought, as well.
And weren't both Gulf Wars fought under the flimsy excuse (given by the quasi-honest) that oil was critical to our national security? Isn't that a big piece of PNAC? The pipeline across Afghanistan factored hugely into NeoCon's dream of controlling the Middle East. Would they really let one company give that much away?

15. The beginning? China and Japan already own one third of the US
because it is holding one-third of our debt. They are just figuring that why buy the debt when they have the cash to own the assets outright.

16. CNOOC is a well run company, but
it is an arm of the Chinese Communist party.

This is all a move in the "greatest game". Sure, oil will be traded on the open market, but when push comes to shove it will come down to who controls what.

This is all about the geo-politics of oil. It is not in the U.S. interest for this to happen.

The thing is: Bush can't do anything about it. He's borrowing billions of dollars per day from the Chinese Communist. Let Bush or Congress try to block this acquisition and see what happens to T-Bills. One or two days of "no buy" would rattle the U.S. economy to the bone.

When we were running surpluses under Clinton, we were too strong for China to make this play. Now: Bush has made America China's bitch and I loathe him for it.

20. Whining hypocrites...
just last month they were complaining that Russia regained
control from one of the wests oligarchic good old boys who
was ready to sell his ill gotten privatization oil company
to a western firm.

To all the Americans what the hell did you think they would get in
return for all that wall-mart crap.

Most of this companies assets are in third countries so
what ground do we have to block it.

I suppose they could get a hundred year lease on some land
and set up a naval base and a torture camp on US soil.

We would still have no moral ground to stand on.
