Tribunal' accuses U.S., Britain of war crimes in Iraq

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - International anti-war advocates accused the United States and Britain on Friday of committing war crimes in the invasion and occupation of Iraq in a symbolic "tribunal" in Turkey's largest city.

Former UN officials, legal experts and human rights activists said they convened the World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI), to examine whether the 2003 invasion was an "illegal aggressive war". It has no binding authority and no officials were present to defend the U.S.-led war. A "verdict" is due on Monday.

U.S. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair declined invitations to appear at the tribunal.

"The war and occupation challenges us to face the threat to international law by the actions of the U.S. and UK," said British international human rights lawyer Phil Shiner.

2. It was only a matter of time...
The Bushistas believe they've signed off on any accountability regarding their war crimes. They think this will save them from the Hague. I don't think so. This will come back to haunt them (as it should) and like Hank Kissinger, they will find that there will be parts of the world they dare not venture in or to. Of course, since Bush never went anywhere anyway, it won't be a problem for him, but who knows about the others.

3. No one is going to indite Bush or Cheney in the Hague
That is NEVER going to happen. We can wish it, hope it, pray for it, but no country is going to do it and deal with the shit storm that will follow.
