US: Iraq-Like Regime not Approriate for Syria

By Anadolu News Agency (aa)
Published: Friday 24, 2005

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said an Iraq-like regime change in Syria would not be appropriate but that the Damascus administration should change its policies.

Rice told the al-Sharq al-Awsad newspaper, that the US wants to send out a loud message that Syrians should make change, and that specifically means they should avoid any situation bringing instability to Lebanon.

Every situation is unique, she responded. When asked, if the Washington administration would try to overthrow Syrian President Bessar Asad, she said that Syria is not Iraq and Iraq is not Syria.

The regime in Syria could change its stance on its policies and its neighbors, Rice added, hoping Syrians will take the course.

Kim Jone Il, not Saddam Hussein, is his example to follow.

5. Arrogance, Arrogance, Arrogance
I've never understood this. Put it in the same category as missionaries who go into an area and say, our religion is right, yours is wrong, you must be assimilated.

6. So now Condo gets to decide what's "appropriate" for other countries?
You! You need this sort of regime.
And you, you get a "regime change", we're going to Bremerize your industrial base.

7. Translation
We have so many troops bogged down on occupation duty in Iraq that we couldn't pull this stunt off again.

10. Iraq doesn't have a regime
It has some flunkies who meet in secret in the colonial fortress known as the green zone in order to act as if they are a 'regime'.

Iraq is a US military occupied protectorate, a colony of the new empire.

in a publicly stupid, arrogant sort of way. This is as clearspeak as it gets. Syria butt out. You're not a target yet. But regime change in Iran, by thunderous implication, is. This is an open slap that Syria change its policy and sit out the next war and make things go nicey on the borders of Iraq and in Lebanon. Besides they have no oil to finance regime change.

This is not about civilizing or democratizing in the slightest but bullying the region to accept US will.

In the past, common people were comforted by prophecies depicting the excruciating punishment of people like Rice in the afterlife. I would settle, in these kinder, gentler times, for seeing Condoleeza in the dock
at the Hague. Better for her too in the long run.

I am an American and war criminals don't set policy or principles in my name. And I do want regime change in MY country. Most Americans do.

14. In other words (Rice): "We don't have the troops right now"
"We have to take care of Iran first."
