Bush to address Americans from Fort Bragg

Reuters
Friday, June 24, 2005; 9:08 AM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will deliver a major address about Iraq on Tuesday night from the U.S. military base at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, a senior Bush administration official said.

Bush is expected to use the speech to outline his strategy for victory in Iraq and argue for completing the mission amid increasing public doubts about the war.

17. Hmmm, somehow I doubt that very much
Happy place or not, the folks at Ft. Bragg will NOT boo Bush or show anything but the most enthusiastic response to everything he does or says. From the moment he hits the podium until the last malaprop is spoken, the troops will pound their hands into hamburger applauding the fraud.

The coverage will emphasize the warm reception, the happy warriors, their adulation for Bush, and the firm, decisive manner of the Commander in Chief.

Anyone want to bet me? I'd be the happiest clam in the sand to lose a ten dollar donation to DU on this one.

I tell you what. If there is anything buy thunderous applause, war whoops, hooahs, etc., coming from the crowd, the troops will have hell to pay from the sergeant major, the first sergeant, the platoon sergeant, all the way down the line. They will fake it if they have to. They will punch themselves in the nuts if they have to, but they will do what they're told.

This is why Republican presidents always fall back on military audiences when the going gets tough - because they know they'll get the kind of "enthusiasm" from them, faked or not, that is lacking among civilians.

39. the troops have no say in the matter
they will applaud LOUDLY and like it.

that's why he's giving this speech with soldiers as the backdrop.

he knows there will be zero dissent, and overwhelming enthusiasm.

Like it or not, he is their commander-in-chief, and disrepecting him would leave them open to disciplinary action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

As Helen Thomas noted, Bush is one of three presidents who, once they got in hot water, limited their appearances before "safe, military" audiences -- the others being Nixon and Johnson.

55. I don't care anymore
Sorry and I'm sure this is heresy, but I don't care about the troops over there anymore. They have enabled this madman to continue this tragedy. They applaud him, they allow themselves to be used as props on his stage, they shake his hand and they continue to go to Iraq. Too bad. And yes, they could refuse to go, they could speak the truth, their parents and spouses could be marching in front of the White House; there is a lot the troops could do to help bring this madman down.

81. Re: Happy place not, but made to look otherwise
Absolutely correct, gratuitous!

The entire base will be under strict orders to look thrilled and delighted, humbled and respectful with the chance to be anywhere near the commander-in-chief, issued directly by White House staff (maybe without Bush even 'knowing').

Any sign of dissent will be dealt with harshly, they'll be told.

The base command must be thinking this is about the lowest they've had to stoop in modern memory. It's a propaganda ploy they can hardly enjoy.

Bush's message to the enemy ('terrists') fabricated by an illegal invasion: We are in firm control and will not be deterred by morality issues or by the present need to display enforced loyalty. (My neocon mentors have decided) it's time to escalate the conflict. We're coming to get you so give up NOW!

Bush's message to the American people: We are in firm control and will not be deterred by morality issues or by the present need to display enforced loyalty. (My neocon mentors have decided) it's time to escalale the conflict. Be afraid of what happens if we don't get everything we demand!

References of those who've said this Iraq "regime change" venture was going to be a bad idea friom the start are long overdue. Spotlighting war dissidents as 'the enemy within' could have enormous implications for waning morale of a waning support base, especially if backed by a challenge.

Gives a speech in front of cheering soldiers so he will be connected in folks mind with Patriot President leading the troops like his "Mission Accomplished Stunt.

"Mission Accomplished" turned out to cause him ridicule. But, I guess he's a "one trick pony" and will try it again. :-(

65. Bush in a tank? OMG...how will they "fix" this one. For Rove it's a huge
Mistake. The "fly boy" didn't go over so well...but at that time folks still had hope that he wasn't the "Idiot-in-Thief" he appeared to be.

Whatever "Stunt" he pulls isn't going to come off too well, methinks. Because we've all seen what he "IS" and we don't like it.

I think this might be a HUGE DISASTER! But, he's a Lucky SOAB....and so who knows.

My gut says this is the Speech w/Soldiers that tips him over to the place where Lyndon Johnson went.

 Rove has lost it. The "Script" is old and they are seen as "has beens." For the drama crew in this administration it's time to "get the hook." They are done for.

But, it won't be "clear skies and easy sailing for us Dems." It will take DECADES to undo what they've done in their years in power which goes back BEFORE CLINTON..in case some of you hear have been on this planet awhile long...

Since public opinion polls before the invasion recorded that African Americans opposed the war by some 70% (you never heard this in MSM), I'd guess that by now the percentage of African Americans who oppose has risen to something like 85-90%.

It's easy to give speeches in front of soldiers grateful to be alive and going home every night to their families.

Why not give the "Iraq Plan" speech to the people who really need to hear it in Iraq?

It's June 2005 and this turkey has "a plan" for Iraq over 2 years after HE started the war.

Hey Bush, I have a suggestion. Go take a flying leap out of a C-141 at 5000 feet without a parachute.

47. Ft. Bragg
It has been all but shut down since the war on Iraq. There are times when only active military is allowed on base. My father, retired Airborne Ranger, can gain access, but my mom cannot. It is rare when they shut it down to that level, but it has happened twice in the past few months to my knowledge because my mom was bitching about not being able to get my dad's meds from the hospital. Shrub will be VERY insulated there and Fayetteville is very military-friendly (to a point), but my understanding is even they are growing VERY weary of what is happening. Who knows, maybe a solider will stand up to his Commander and Chief and say, "no more! I will not continue to follow illegal orders, as it is a disgrace to our nation and the uniform I wear!" One can dream!

Poor soldiers are gonna be standing around for HOURS waiting fo5r the chimp-in-chief to: 1) fly in 2) shit all over them 3) fly out. Base will be in lockdown for hours before and after. What must be done to protect the most hated man in the world!

54. Why that silly President Girlie-Con-Man......
...hiding behind the skirts of our American troops! It's so obvious a photo-op for his NUCKING FUTS political base.

And the lovely models standing behind him will represent every nationality, race, color and creed handpicked by the RNC and Karen Hughes.

I agree, if he wants to say something important, he can say it from the Oval Office. Most Americans don't realize the troops are "ordered" to stand at attention and be respectful of Mr. Noodles.

82. Chimp couldn't find the Oval Office if his
life depended on it. He's never there. Either out riding his bike or eating rubber chicken at a fundraiser or talking to cows in Crawford or reading "My Pet Goat" to schoolchildren or posing for staged photo ops like the one Tuesday - in short doing everything but the job he was "selected" to do. Because, let's face it, he doesn't have the smarts to make it as a Friendly Greeter at Wal-Mart.

On any given day Cheney is the guy sitting behind the Oval Office desk conducting the evil business of the BFEE. He's obviously given the OK for chimp to make a well-rehearsed speech to a carefully selected audience under orders to applaud the boob. Chimp is probably pissed beyond words that he'll have to spend all weekend practicing, which will take valuable time away from his bottle of Jim Beam and his video games.

64. Why would this be televised?
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 05:55 PM by Bleachers7
This is just another one of his bullshit speeches that he gives every day. He should speak from the white house, not a military base. I bet there will be backlash. He's come out worse every time he's done this.

What's interesting is that the more fucked up everything is, the more he does prime time speeches. The last one was pretty recent.

He's tring to get out ahead of the Abu Graihb pictures. That's when the support for the war will really take off. :eyes:

68. A “Banana Republic” speech by the supreme leader (w/o required uniform?)
This really smacks of a Goebble's staged Nazi propaganda rant by Herr furher to warmonger.

to show the real cost of this war that he wanted so badly in order to get his jollies.

he only does this when things are really, really, really bad. And then he inevitably makes them worse.

Watch the poll numbers plummet even farther next week!
