Arnold gets cool reception
Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 06:09 AM by joefree1
By Michael Finnegan, Los Angeles Times
and Jeffrey L. Rabin

A day after Arnold Schwarzenegger's victory in the recall election, a dispute erupted Wed-nesday between the governor-elect and the state's most powerful legislator over the tripling of California's car tax.
Schwazenegger, moving to keep a campaign promise, told state Senate leader John Burton, a Democrat from San Francisco, that he could single-handedly repeal the tax hike as soon as he took office. The irascible senator disagreed.
edit ...
Schwarzenegger's base of support is heavily white, male, conservative, Republican and Christian, according to a Los Angeles Times Poll of voters who cast ballots Tuesday. By contrast, Schwarzenegger was relatively unpopular among blacks, Latinos, Asians, Democrats, liberals and Jews, although he ran stronger than many Republicans have in the past. He ran weakest in San Francisco and the surrounding area, as well as parts of Los Angeles County.
Unfortunately for Schwarzenegger, that's the turf of the liberal Democrats who dominate the Legislature and set its agenda.

1. I heard Burton on NPR last night
he said that Ahnold wants to repeal the car tax and yet not cut educational funding. Since education counts for 40% of the budget, he doesn't see how AS can keep both promises. And if AS tries to Terminate the legislature by becoming a dictator, he'll have a fight on his hands.

But there's no way he can keep his promises. Not that he ever intended to. The Gropenator will continue to destroy public schools and other public programs in favor of the corporate masters he serves.

Next week Bush will visit California to enjoy the Arnold victory glow. :puke:

5. AS will dump blame on the legislature and ram shit thru w/initiatives
My former home getting fucked over by a muscle head. My parents and sister living near LA are livid. I'm sure all my old democratic friends in Pasedena and Claremont have come unglued, this was 1994 all over, 70% of the voters Tuesday were white males and females, the state is less 50% white. Conservative whites went to the polls Tuesday, alot of our base stayed home, AGAIN.

Prop. 13 has royally screwed children in this state. Wealthy districts make up the shortfall to some extent by asking parents to fund programs through the PTA - often through "suggested" contributions of hundreds of dollars. I have a friend whose children go to public school in Calabasas - a very well-to-do suburb. Each year she gets a fund raising letter from the PTA asking for $350.00 per child. This is on top of a bunch of other fundraisers. I get hit up for almost as much at my daughter's school.

In the districts where the parents simply don't have the money, kids go without.

Meantime I heard the neanderthal at his press conference yesterday talking about cutting "waste" out of government and mentioning "medi-cal" in the same breath. Sure Arnie, go after the meager health-care supplemental of our poorest citizens to fund tax cuts for Jay Leno and his fleet of luxury cars.

People have awfully short memories. The California "car tax" only came down a few years ago when there was a big surplus. Once Enron got through with us an automatic trigger pushed it back up to where it had been all along. If you don't want to pay a big car tax, don't buy a big, expensive car. Sheesh.

People were out buying $50,000 Lexus's...now explain
how someone who can afford a car like those is
complaining about a rate hike of a couple hundred dollars
on a lower priced car?

I guess these are the same people who benefit
from owning a pre-Prop 13 house still....

46. Perhaps Arnie will suggest repealing Prop.13
I would imagine there are much fewer pre-Prop.13 homeowners now then in 1979. Perhaps Arnie will suggest repealing it.

I moved from California in 1979, having lived there since 1954. Before I left, I knew of one person who whined and moaned constantly about the need to pass Prop. 13, claiming she and her family would have to move out of the state if it didn't as they wouldn't be able to afford staying (they bought their house in 1965). It passed and she and her husband promply bought a "weekend retreat" (a second house) at Big Bear Lake.

That action alone taught me a lot about setting priorities.

Joe Conason's Journal
Should California Demos try to recall Arnold Schwarzenegger?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Oct. 8, 2003 |
Total Recall II meets Predator III
If politics is warfare by other means, then the California Democrats will now be tempted to respond in kind to the stomping they suffered yesterday. This has nothing to do with whether Gray Davis deserved his ignominious fate, and everything to do with whether Republican aggression is answered with timidity or strength.
According to the state Constitution, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be vulnerable to a new recall petition within 90 days -- which means, as Kos pointed out this morning, that the filing could take place just in time for the March 2004 presidential primary.
Is this a good idea? Perhaps not, but printing up and circulating Recall Arnold petitions is still worth considering.

11. All they have to do is look at Virginia
For an example of a boneheaded man who won the governorship based on his "I'll repeal the car tax" crap, and with absolutely no plan to replace the lost revenue. Virginia's been in the hole ever since and where's Jim Gilmore now? It's taken a Democratic governor to come up with the plan to restore Virginia's budget and to fix what that repuke Gilmore left behind as the doorknob hit him in the ass on the way out.

Go ahead, Arnie - try and repeal that car tax and add more undue burden on the citizenry of CA. Where in hell is the money going to come from to replace that $4 bilion, eh???

What a moron.

18. Tell me about it - I live here

Gilmore promised to phase the car tax out in three installments, eventually 'zeroing out' at the end of year 3. This "one trick pony" act got him elected, and of course the car tax gimmick was stopped short of the year 3 goal due to "unexpected" budget shortfalls. So now it's up to the Democrat Warner to undue the mess. We now have a smaller car tax, but a revenue crisis the likes of which this state has not seen in years.

I feel for you, California.

when the Virginia economy hit the skids, Jim Gilmore taxcuts to the rich had promised not hold off on reducing the car tax in the event financial circumstances turned for the worse. But oh no! Gilmore didn't lift a finger, and now the VA finanaces are very close, if not already FUBAR. IN state colege tution is skyrocketing--when I went to ODU a semester tution for in state students like me was only $2200 or so for 12 credits, now it's like $4000 or more :eyes: And the local cities like Norfolk, Chesapeake, etc have had to jack up their property and other local taxes and fees. so California, if you want to see your future, just look at us here in Virginia :eyes:

43. car tax
One could support reducing or cutting the 40% increase in government growth during the past several years as vs creating new taxes. If one believes that the taxpayer can make do with less of his money then certainly the same would be true of the government..ie reduce how much it requires to spend....Where am I going wrong with my logic?

Along with cuts, you need to have ways to raise

Unless you don't care about services that we all
pay for, you won't get them.

2. An awful lot of people
don't seem to understand the connection between taxes and services.

Many years ago I lived in Minneapolis and worked in a job where most of my fellow employees had moved there recently (within the year or so) from Texas. To a person they complained bitterly about the tax burden living in Minnesota. In the next breath they'd invariably marvel at the fine schools, the good parks, the well-maintained infrastructure. I never got over being stunned that they couldn't see how one led to the other.

Thanks to George W Bush, we're all Texans now.

That's what Conservatives cater too. The average peon wants his cake and to be able to eat it as well, and Conservative politicans promise that.

In my home province we are having our elections and I went to a debate at the University. (They get pretty heated) and the Conservative party claims they will lower taxes and increase spending on health and Education. Of course I asked how they intended to do this before dramatically pausing and saying. "Oh right deficits." He denied deficits as well but didn't elaborate. I just asked him what the fuck he was talking about... Morons...

They did an exit favorable/disfavorable poll during the recall election. What was interesting was that it was about 48%/48% with women actually giving him a higher DISAPPROVAL score. That means all those who didn't vote for him didn't like him. Arnold still thinks, like Boy George at the outset, that he can somehow charm or bully bluff his way to get what he wants. In the end he's as phoney as his skin peel.

Where does steroid boy think this money will come from w/o registration fees? The ONLY reason the fees tripled was because county revenues fell below a percentage fixed by the legislation. who are hurting. For Arnold to overturn it, he has to announce that the budget is fine. Latest estimates are at least a $10 billion deficit and maybe more like a $20 billion deficit. That would increase another $4 billion if he reverses the car tax.

Today's paper has several quotes from county and city officials planning to sue over this.

Doing the math...

+/-3.5 mil voters voted NO to Recall, but only
+/-2.4 mil voters voted for the anti-recall candidate, Bustamante.

Republican candidates recieved 62% of the votes cast (3 of every 5)
Democratic candidates received 32% of the votes cast
Other candidates received 06% of the votes cast

We've got issues in CA that hiding our heads in the desert sand won't fix. x(

37. Christian???
Christians are a big supporter of Arnold? Oh.. the hypocrisy!! I guess it's okay for their t.v. preachers, and republican politicians to be sinful... as long as they muster up some lame as t.v. apology. This whole Christian thing lately is just a political ruse. It's so IN to call yourself a Christian since 9/11.. so they can go to heaven no matter how they hurt and abuse other people.

I am so TIRED of angry white men running things!! Time for some pissed off women of all colors to kick some pasty, flabby, white man ass! O8)

53. WOW..DID YOU SEE THAT!???
Sorry for shouting...I don't think the press will forget that little "moment." That was truly Arnold unplugged...and unhandled. Nice job, recall folks...you got yourself a real beauty here.

55. it is NOT over!
Just wait until one or several of these women file sexual assualt charges again the Terminator! :grr: I hope it happens ASAP! The sooner people realize this this better.

Tucker Carlson made me so angry the other day. He kept saying over and over again, "What's so bad about a little pat on the fanny." Once was bad enough to hear but he seemed to be getting his jollies off by saying it repeatedly. I guess he enjoys this sort of thing himself, the hard up little nerd of a pervert!

:grr:

:kick:
