'Nutballs' no more, talk radio jocks bask in their recall role
With listeners, they inched left to back a viable GOP candidate

Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Staff Writer Thursday, October 9, 2003

Conservative talk show host Melanie Morgan couldn't resist a little day-after gloating Wednesday, wallowing in the afterglow of a Republican measuring the drapes in the governor's mansion.

"Vindication is a powerful word," said Morgan, who helped birth the recall petition drive on the KSFO-AM 560 morning show she co-hosts. "Almost from the beginning, every liberal media outlet in the state referred to us as right-wing fanatics, a fringe political movement. We were derided as complete nutballs. "So I'm feeling really damn good today," Morgan said.

While the recall campaign wasn't the first time conservative talk radio hosts led a successful revolt in Sacramento -- they've led the "pitchfork and torches" brigade opposing everything from smog checks to the gas additive MTBE -- the recall was different.

Instead of just ranting into the stratosphere about the horrible Democrats in charge, hosts encouraged their listeners to become that most liberal of words: activists.
