Bush fighting to regain confidence of Americans
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Five months after starting his second term with high hopes, President Bush is struggling to regain the confidence of Americans concerned about the direction of the
Iraq war and the U.S. economy.

With his job approval rating slumping to 42 percent in a poll by The New York Times and CBS News, down from 51 percent in the aftermath of the November election, Bush has begun an effort to refocus his presidency -- a move welcomed by anxious Republicans.

"I think Bush is in the process of regaining his footing, and focusing on real dinner-table issues," Republican consultant Scott Reed said.

Bush began his second term in January with an ambitious plan to overhaul the Social Security retirement program but it has failed to gain traction on Capitol Hill and many Americans are skeptical. The preoccupation over Social Security figured in the delay of his promised attempt to overhaul the tax code.

1. He'd have it easier of he said
"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Look at me! (jumps up and down) Waaaaaaaaaaaaah! Waaaaaaaaaaaaah! Look at me you poopyhead! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!"

Americans looooooooooove babies.

And what's a "real dinner table issue" anyway? That reminds me, the vegetarian low-fat pizza is in the oven, better get it out...

3. Tricky Dick is thinking, "Hey, now there's a guy who makes me look good!"
Nixon must be down in the fires of Hell, and looking on Bush with amusement.

BTW...anybody know how his ratings compare with Nixon during the 2nd term? Bush must get a shiver up his spine, every time he walks past that picture of Tricky Dick in the hallway.

Pretty soon it will be hard to find a jury to let him off once we put him on trial if he somehow escapes going to jail. Just watch though... 21. In comparison to Nixon
Interview Date: January 22-28, 1969 from the Gallup poll
In view of the developments since we entered the fighting in Vietnam, do you think the United States made a mistake sending troops to fight in Vietnam?
Yes 52%
No 39%
No Opinion 9%

The numbers are similar to Bush's

From USA Today 12 June 2005, "In the Gallup Poll, 56% say the Iraq war wasn't "worth it," essentially matching the high-water mark of 57% a month ago."

From CNN 23 May 2005 -- "A majority of Americans do not believe it was worth going to war in Iraq, according to a national poll released Tuesday.

Fifty-seven percent of those polled said they did not believe it was worth going to war, versus 41 percent who said it was.

Americans appeared evenly divided over whether the decision to send U.S. troops to Iraq was a mistake, with 49 percent saying yes and 48 percent saying no."

It is not clear how they asked the question. But the Iraq war and the Vietnam war have very similar poll numbers.

...asshole. People realize they've been duped - finally, and that their kids were sent to die for a pack of pretentions lies in a 'war' that is purely based on oil and profits for bu$h's defense industry buddies.

THAT, and the US used napalm (considered a WMD) over there and they LIED about that too, oh and there's the prisoner abuse and torture and the fact that Iraq WAS NOT a hotbed of terrorist activity until bu$hit invaded over there (it is NOW) so that means he only made the probelm WORSE. Osama could not have in all his wildest DREAMS asked for a better recruiter to his cause than george w. bu$h. Shall I go on?

GEORGE BUSH IS A TERRORIST and a LIAR. He's no better than Saddam or the rest of them. HE IS PART OF THE PROBLEM. I cannot believe he isn't in PRISON yet. If Gitmo is SUCH a wonderful place, let's send him there...he can choose between chicken and fish and two kinds of fruit before we put the electrodes on his testicles.... ;)

JFK, and it was Senator Long that said, and I apply it to Bush," things ain't been the same, since we got that polecat Lyndon in the White House".
Oh my, I am wondering just how slowwwwwwwwww he will speak if he addresses the nation.
Oh, and by the way, the next time you happen to watch the movie, "Gladiator" with Russell Crowe, and the character of Commodus played by Joaquin Phoenix, see if the remarks made by the Senators about the new Ceasar fits bush to a tee...... one I can recall off hand.... " He enters Rome like a conquering hero". ", Yes, but what has he conquered?"

43. CONFIDENCE?
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 05:14 PM by rocknation
When the Downing Street Minutes have blown away any resonable doubt that he KNEW there were no WMDs?

When he's still claiming that 9/11 justifies his invasion of Iraq though it's been proven that http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A47812-2004Jun16.html">one had nothing to do with the other?

That "fighting terrorists in Iraq so you will not have to face them at home" is a sane military strategy?

When he prefers cutting Social Security benefits and increasing national debt to raising the salary cap?

When he's stood up for Terri Schiavo but not Baby Sun Hudson?

When military recruiters are under so much pressure they're kidnapping prospects?

When new recruits are STILL being advised to buy their own armor?

When members of the National Guard are waiting on expense reimbursement a month after Halliburton received a multi-MILLION-dollar performance bonus?

WHY THE HELL SHOULD ANYONE HAVE CONFIDENCE IN HIM?

They might need a few people who know how to sail a ship of state. Not those who to play to people's fears.

As the first Republican president Abe Lincoln said, "You can fool all of the people some of the time. Some of the people all of the time. But you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

52. "Pocketbook issues?"
That takes a lot of fucking nerve coming from a bunch of thugs bent on destroying what little is left of the middle class for the benefit of the super-rich few. It's unfortunate that they won't reveal to the public the real specifics and motives behind their "pocketbook" agenda.

I'm guessing the real meaning of this alleged shift is that they will refrain from talking about Social Security and get back to "pocketbook," "dinner-table" issues like gays and abortion. More of the same from these pricks. I'm sure they'll go back to exploiting 9/11 again for political gain (Bush has already done this with his recent, infamous Iraq = 9/11 statement). They'll go back to their strengths: focusing on wedge issues.
