A Few Wrinkles in (Maria) Shriver's Marriage to NBC News
WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 — Maria Shriver, who has at times acted as a shock absorber for her husband, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his campaign for governor, plans to return to her job as a correspondent and occasional anchor at "Dateline NBC."

But NBC News officials said on Tuesday that they had not decided what journalistic duties she would take on. And some people at NBC News and at other networks questioned whether Ms. Shriver's role as a disinterested journalist had been compromised, at least for political news.

Neal Shapiro, the NBC News president, said Ms. Shriver's involvement in the recall campaign should not tarnish a long career in journalism, one that Ms. Shriver began at KYW-TV in Philadelphia in 1977, as a news writer.

(snip)

Throughout the campaign Ms. Shriver has had to endure embarrassments beyond those related to the groping charges. For example, various news reports reprised a 1988 Playboy interview in which Mr. Schwarzenegger said he did not allow Ms. Shriver to wear pants.

1. So Punish Her for His Sins?
Don't you love it, Abuser/assaulter Arnie gets elected by CA voters - Blitzer asks - did the groping allegations help Arnold....

meanwhile Maria loses her job because what - the allegations are true? Or what, she comes out looking like the foolish weak wife who can't leave her abusive husband?

I can't believe people voted for Arnold. More than that, I can't believe Maria will lose her job because of this, and Arnold gets a job because of this.

2. NBC is just putting up a "fuss" for appearances
NBC is yellow journalism to the max. The network will appear to be concerned about unbalanced reporting for the sake of its viewership, but after it does its tapdance, it will be back to business as usual. Nothing will change. Besides, the majority of Americans don't care whether the news is biased or not. Hell, they think it's liberal, so what do they know.

5. This is serious stuff. We already have a media/government
problem.

Regardless of whether she is good at what she does...oh dear. Media promotes itself, in all of its glory and aspects. Notice this as you listen to the radio or watch television. (Why else do we watch the promotion of pop stars on the evening news?)

OY.

7. I'm going to protest ...
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 01:31 AM by gauguin57
If Maria is given any beat but fluffy, non-political, non-issue-oriented features to cover for NBC News, I'll protest. I'm writing them a letter. Why should a woman who helped put her husband in the governor's mansion (especially of a powerful state with ... what ... 54 electoral votes) ... why should she get a free platform at NBC? Unless she's put on a nonpolitical beat, it's a complete conflict of interest. And the networks/cable stations already have too many conflicts of interest festering around. Sorry, Maria ... you made your bed with the Skankmeister. Now take your medicine.

And eat something, for Gawd's sake!

24. She will be expected to stump for Bush....
As the wife of California's newly-elected Repuke Gropenator, Maria will be expected to stump for Bush when he makes the rounds in Calif in 2004. You think she's betrayed the family legacy now, just wait!

There's no way in hell she can continue to juggle such conflicting interests and loyalties. This is why her future as a journalist SHOULD be finished. It was HER choice and she will (finally) have to live with it.

9. How can she be an "objective" corespondent?- she is openly GOP
We should start an e-mail campaign- how can she be objective after openly campaigning for the GOP- and during the Presidential election cycle, no less??

"Journalists" are not supposed to openly campaign for one party or another...

13. I think that publishing Eunice Shriver's true, unexpurgated
biography is what would sink the Maria myth of Arnie's husbandly image

Eunice is to parenthood what Lucretia Borgia was to the toxins industry

Could you see Pickles or Lynn TinMan working for a TV news org? Hell, no, you couldn't.

She's California's "First Lady Designate" now. Her news career is over.

Her mother gets that, too, for happily jumping on the Schwarzenegger bandwagon.

17. She's Not Alone...Andrea Mitchell
surely has a conflict of interest being married to "Crazy Al"...but no one seems to say boo about that nuptial.

They'll put Maria on the "fluff" beat...and on a semi-regular basis for now as they test her "Q" ratings...if she does well, you'll see her front and center, if not, she gets "Ashleigh Banfielded".

20. This is mean
Maria Shriver is beautiful and elegant. She is a Democrat from the most powerful Democratic family. She has always been a good reporter for NBC, so if she wants to keep on working, why not?

21. Ummm...maybe because she's married to the Governor of CA now?
Issues of impartiality and conflict of interest come to mind...

Make her a political commentator or analyst, but not a reporter or correspondent.

Or are you suggesting that since they've "lowered the bar" so much why not just get rid of it totally?

22. "this is mean?"
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 12:33 PM by gauguin57
Uh ... pardonnez-moi ... it's not "mean." I don't give a flying fig whether she keeps working or not. But she can't cover politics. Period. Put her on "Dateline" to anchor the "murder-of-the-week." Or whatever. Put her on the medical beat; let her do a special series on the eating disorders from which she so clearly suffers. But she's the wife of a dude who was pushed into office to corral California for the GOP in 2004, pure and simple. Why else was Darrell Issa -- the dude who bankrolled this fiasco for his own run at the Gov's mansion -- told to take a hike (er, left the race to spend more time with his family ***cough cough***)? The GOP knew the bright lights of Hollywood would blind the voters to this insidious Pug power grab, and get them the statehouse for their own Election Year use. Maria is part and parcel of the whole thing. Fluff beat for her, big time!

P.S. She has a voice like a gargling octopus. I wouldn't miss that annoying whine one little bit.

23. If Andrea Mitchell can work for NBC, Maria can, but I don't care
about Maria S or her parents. It repulsed me to see her campaign for him and to see her parents on the stage taking congratulations and shaking hands. All for their grandchildren and her children? What an American tragedy. This country is divided and the Democrats and Independents didn't take the lead in destroying our country.

How does a person listen to the news and avoid having to listen to his voice, look at him, or hear about his traitorous acts to come?

Californians who voted for him are stupid because they are going to be paying for the thefts of Enron twice.

25. There's a big difference...
Because as the wife of Calif's Repuke Governor Maria will be expected to be actively campaigning for Repub candidates and that includes Bush in 2004. Mitchell had/has no such demands or expectations to publicly stump for political parties or candidates.

Maria made her choices and now she must live with the consequences!

28. I agree Maria is elegant
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 01:27 PM by sweet_scotia
and maybe even beautiful, (if you look quick) but most women raised in wealthy, affluent families like the Kennedys learn good 'public persona' skills early on in life.

and....

Maria is credited with getting the women's vote after the avalanche of allegations last week.

Shriver Played Key Role in Husband's Bid

Shriver, a member of America's most famous political family, appeared at several events on the campaign trail to help boost Schwarzenegger's standing among women. She also stood by him in the last week amid allegations that Schwarzenegger groped several women over the years.
