PNEUMONIA CLUSTER - CHINA (XINJIANG): REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
PNEUMONIA CLUSTER - CHINA (XINJIANG): REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
***********************************************
A ProMED-mail post
<http://www.promedmail.org>
ProMED-mail is a program of the
International Society for Infectious Diseases
<http://www.isid.org>

Date: 15 Jun 2005
From: ProMED-mail <promed@promedmail.org>

We have heard from a reliable source about a report of a cluster of
pneumonia cases in Tashan Hospital, leading to the isolation of patient(s)and hospital healthcare workers for "viral infection." Tashan is located600 km from the capital city of Xinjiang Province and is the area where an outbreak of H5N1 among migratory birds (see ProMED-mail postings below) was reported to the OIE by the Ministry of Agriculture recently.

To date, reports are that influenza was ruled out in these patients, and a diagnosis of "lobar pneumonia secondary to streptococcal A infection" was made.

***********

ProMED-mail does not have further detailed information on this cluster (such as number of patients, ages, outcomes) or specific information on the laboratory testing that was performed. We are posting this report, as the report of isolation of patients and hospital staff is curious in the face of a bacterial pneumonia cluster and begs the question of why this was implemented. More information from knowledgeable sources would be appreciated. - Mod.MPP

1. Uncovering the Cover-up in China
The above ProMed RFI is not an influenza story. It is the uncovering of a cover-up of phase 6 flu pandemic in China.

3. Final Phase 6 - Pandemic Has Started
Phase 6 is the final phase. It means that the flu is being efficiently transmitted human-to-human (as in the big one has started).

22. China Restricts Sample Sharing - Cover Up Shifting to High Gear
China has limited distribution of bird flu samples to researchers outside of country.

Cover-up is intensifying.

5. Strep A is just as bad, if not worse
That's what killed Jim Henson. When it's an infection in a cut, it can turn into the grisly "flesh eating bacteria."

A cluster of Strep A cases is every bit as bad as a cluster of avian flu cases.

This is H5N1 Not Bacteria
This is H5N1. It is not bacterial pneumonia which is not very contagious. Both patients and health care workers are quarantined.

9. Depends on how long it takes to get into the airline system.
After that, it could be here in days.

Assuming that's what is happening.

12. A couple of the big movers of the 1918 Influenza were ships and trains....
...and as you implied, the addition of the air component could spread Avian Flu rather quickly.

Let's hope that what we're reading about is not Avian Flu.

21. One Flight Away
Yes avian flu is one flight away in many respects. The two outbreaks in China are in remote areas and the Nature Reserves throughout the country are closed. However, the reports out of Tacheng sound like health care workers are being admitted to the isolation units, which would suggest transmission is quite efficient and transport out of China is just a matter of (very little) time.

10. Two Weeks for Qinghia to Tacheng Movement
It took less than two weeks to move from Qinghia to Tacheng.

The birds are migrating west(toward Europe) and north (toward Russia). No telling where the people are flying.

13. North towards Alaska
a small but significant percent of birds "cross over" every year, including Arctic Warblers, wagtails, wheatears, bluethroats, and a bunch of different shorebirds.

Even if they stopped all air travel tomorrow, it would only be a matter of time.

15. Repent! For The End Is At Hand!
Geez, you guys are worse than Freepers for this Armageddon head-for-the-bunkers stuff.

You'd think we'd never had outbreaks of pneumonia, or flu, or bacterial diseases or anything else before.

Well you have, and right in the US.

And it's not 1918. Nor will it be again.

But don't let me interfere with another perfectly good round of scaring yourselves to death, and the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it.

Carry on.

23. I've recently been reading about the 1918 Pandemic, and I have been....
...horrified by the effect of the pandemic on Philadelphia, PA. Within a very short period of time, hospitals were overwhelmed with the sick, and healthcare professionals were just as sick as the general population. The morgues could no longer take the dead, coffins ran out, and priests...I kid you not...were taking horse drawn wagons into neighborhoods asking that people bring out their dead. Bodies literally DID pile up everywhere and large mass graves became the vehicle by which bodies were eventually buried.

In New York City, they stopped counting the dead after 33,000, and the city had not yet reached its peak.

How long do you think it will take the US hospital system to be overwhelmed by a pandemic of this nature? Will it take as long as a month?

18. I think that's a bit over confident.
These viruses pose a real threat. Seeing it appear in multiple countries isn't good news.

Nothing is a done deal, either way, but it would be foolish to think we couldn't get hit with a pandemic.

The current supply of vaccine for this strain is very limited. They are still going thru FDA approval, and mass production is not taking place (last I heard, anyway). If it mutates into a form that transmits efficiently, and breaks out, there won't be much defense against it, except for staying inside, away from other people, until it blows over.

Here's what the WHO has to say about HN51. It's short, and educational:
