Survey Shows Mental Illness Treatment Up
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 01:11 AM by dArKeR
Americans grappling with mental illness are more likely to be treated for it now than they were 10 years ago, according to a landmark government-backed survey.

The rate of mental illness has remained the same, but researchers believe that with more treatment inroads in the future, rates should eventually start to drop.

"I think things are going to move in a good direction, but we're sort of in the midst of it," said study leader Ronald Kessler, a sociologist at Harvard Medical School.

I clearly posted months ago my theory on how the GOP gets its votes. 15% are from cheating ballot manipulation, 20% are from a twisted Freudian/Jungian hatred/anger which somehow is released by casting a ballot for someone who is sicker than you are.

8. Study link?
Very interesting.

Not that I'm advocating the practice at all.

Salud.

Uuummmmmm, tell me, please . . .

Does this mean that George Walker Bush will finally seek and receive the mental health help that he's needed since childhood?

12. Alas,
distrust in said person is also up, but this hasn't forced him to be more honest. So the answer is not likely.

5. Of course, had Saint Ronnie not shut down all the mental health centers
perhaps there would not be so many who are so sick now. Looks like Big Pharma's profits will skyrocket.

6. I am not being treated but I swear I need it.
The reaction I have every time I see that thing we call a human talking I could just throw something through the darn T.V. set. With * in power it is a wonder everyone is not seeking treatment.

7. No offense but
I don't agree with respect to the Freudian/Jungian position particularly (though I have always enjoyed reading both). Rather consider this. One half of the population is below the mean on intelligence (though many, many of the folks I test/see who may be on the down side of the curve express - unsolicited by me - hatred of Bush. Many of these folks have lost or are in jeapardy of losing everything due to Bush economics and failed health care).

In addition, a good portion of those on both sides of the curve have identifiable psychopathology. Many folks are simply caught up in their own life concerns and fairly self-obsessed. Some more are certainly caught up in the expression of the anger and futility of their lives on trigger issues like 'gay marriage'. Further, defensive mechanisms such as projection, reaction formation, denial, discounting and cognitive dissonance affect us all. Selective attention and inattention plague everybody. Add in a good dollop of ignorance and the effects of propaganda, indoctrination and media pandering to Bush and the neocons and whaddayaget?

11. I'm sorry...
I was kinda trying to pack everything in a small space. oops. Also, my grades in French while in High School 40 years ago were not particularly stellar. Nor were my grades in German in college. I did better with Spanish but forgot that years ago. A linguist I ain't.

9. Hopefully this means that the "stigma" of mental illness is waning.
I have nominated this thread.

13. Well, with all the Terror Alerts and Fear mongering since 9/11
... until recently - the clouds parted and NO more terror alerts - amazing! I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with *'s re-selection.

It's no wonder the American people, in general, are burned-out ... exhausted from the constant hype and warmongering rhetoric.
