Sen. Durbin: Gitmo GI's Behaved Like 'Nazis'

Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin compared U.S. troops to Hitler's concentration camp guards on Tuesday, saying that the way American soldiers treated terrorists at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay reminded him of the "Nazis."

Citing FBI accounts of terrorist detainees forced to go without heat or air conditioning, Durbin told the Senate:

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings."
"Sadly, that is not the case," added the number two Senate Democrat. "This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners."

Durbin's comments outraged radio host Rush Limbaugh, who was the first to broadcast the Illinois Democrat's remarks.

11. Yes!
Maybe it's time to turn the old "love it or leave it" on its' head: "if you want to live in a Country that sanctions torture, go live in Saudi Arabia; if you want to live in a One Party totalitarian State, how about emigrating to North Koream" etc.

As someone who (like many) heard "love it or leave it" far too many times during the Vietnam years, I would take a certain satisfaction in saying that.

18. Glad to know
I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

I been saying things like this to people's faces. It really rocks their world. Too bad.

You believe torture is OK? Then you must not be American. Get the fuck out of my country.

You believe lying to Congress and the people to build support for a war is OK? Then you must not be an American. Get the fuck out of my country.

You believe you have the right to interfere with a man or woman's life style choices? Judgment is God's ... you think it is right to play God? You must not be American. There is no divine right of kingship here. Get the fuck out of my country.

You keep your company here and write censorship software for China? You're not an American. Get out.

You wanna sell the American people out to make a fast buck and call it "globalization"? You're not one of us. Get out.

13. Sen. Durbin Stands by Guantanamo Remarks
CHICAGO - Sen. Dick Durbin refused to apologize Wednesday for comments he made on the Senate floor comparing the actions of American soldiers at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis, Soviet gulags and a "mad regime" like Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot's in Cambodia.

Durbin did not plan to apologize for the comments, spokesman Joe Shoemaker said.

"This administration should apologize to the American people for abandoning the Geneva Conventions and authorizing torture techniques that put our troops at risk and make Americans less secure," Durbin said in a statement Wednesday evening.

63. Sen. Durbin has made us all proud.
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 11:51 AM by EST
Here is the e-mail I sent and I mean every word of it!

Dear Sen. Durbin,
Although you and I have exchanged quite a number of letters, notes and e-mails over the last few years, I would be hard pressed to select any other occasion of greater pride and satisfaction in being a long term resident of Illinois as well as being represented by a gentleman of such courage and integrity as yourself.
Your steadfast devotion to public service as well as your most recent aiming of the spotlight of truth at the dark, secretive, and apparently ethically slippery neocon aspirants to the positions of power in this country has not gone unnoticed by the millions of angry and determined voters here and all across the nation.
Please feel free to call on us for any assistance you may need to sort out the rat warren of intrigue and slimy politics that seems to have become the norm in Washington, today. With leaders of the stature of Representative Conyers and yourself in this battle to preserve the constitution and reclaim our beloved country, the fight, no doubt, will still be long and hard, but the ultimate victory seems so much more assured.

With thanks to the both of you, especially for your stands on the recent DSM and GITMO issues, you guys are wonderful!

Sincerely,

Conyers, Dean, Durbin, Boxer - our sort of secret weapon. Truth makes terrific ammunition.

Edited to add: And don't forget Reid!!

35. It's important to note he wasn't just talking about Nazis, here
he was making a broad reference to totalitarianism, using several examples. Is it harsh, and intended to draw attention and fire? Yes, of course it is.

But in the case of our official policy toward "enemy combatants," where ANYONE can be deemed such a critter and hauled off and kept rotting without official charges, let alone a trial, it's not out of line.

31. It's Newsmax???
What do you expect?

This so called news source is on par with Star Magazine, and the National Inquirer. Only difference is Star Magazine is more "accurate".

These are the folks that publish the "Clinton Raped Hillary to Conceive Chelsea" type stories.

Matter of fact, I think Sen Dan Burton worked for them in the field of measuring what a bullet does to a watermelon, or something like that.

It's not news, and belongs in GD, if it belongs anywhere.

Maybe DU should have a "Right-Wing/Neo-con Propaganda Forum" where we could post trash like this from Newsmax, Faux, American Spectator, the Washington Times, etc....

you don't get a free pass for torturing people just because you wear a uniform. the goopers are trying hard to change the subject from 'do you or do you not condemn the use of torture' (which is a losing issue for them, since they support the use of torture) to 'how vociferously should the dems denounce torture'.

its bullsh1t. plain and simple.

I would suggest you do some reading regard conditions inside Nazi prison camps before you go spouting off about how wrong the guy is. As it happens, he's right.

Oh, and while nobody said anything at all about your son specifically, it is those who equate the actions of some soldiers or guards with all of them that keeps people from revealing the truth about that place.

Stop apologizing for the torturers at Gitmo. It is that which makes our nation look bad.

60. Did it EVER occur to you that perhaps some of them ARE Nazis?
Did you ever wonder if people who think the white "race" is supreme might join the military? Did you ever wonder if they act like the white "race" is supreme while they're there?

Did you ever wonder if the military intentionally put those people at that prison, because it knows they'll "do the job"?

Have you ever heard a soldier or former soldier call an Arab a "raghead"? "Dune coon"? "Sand nigger"? I have... and all three reprehensible phrases came out of the same man's mouth, in the same conversation.

The comparison, in some cases, is apt, and shamefully so.

If you can't understand why, I can't help you.

Comparing the American military to Nazi's is a characterization. It has nothing to do with any kind of real truth.

But the main point is, that its politically damaging for us.

I love the irony of the patriot act tape-over-mouth poster that you're using as a signature. One would at first assume that you are, with the picture, protesting the provisions of the Patriot Act. Upon further consideration, it seems like a more straightforward message from you that we had all better 'watch what we say', Fleischer-style.

I choose not to spend my time trying to appease right wing fuckheads. What you do with your time is, of course, your own choice, but please don't attempt to drag me into your cowering stance. I'm not going.

How do you define gulag? What the fuck is Gitmo, then--a Really Tough Campout? High Security Assisted Living? Look at the issue divorced from 9-11. We have set up a place where people can be taken, tortured, and held indefinitely without charge and without the Geneva Convention applying. If the people were Swedes or South Carolinians would we even be trying to assign this a shade of gray?

86. How do you define Gulag? Simple.
Gulag's were forced LABOR camps where millions of Russians died.

If anything, Gitmo resembles a small-scale concentration camp, but certainly not a Gulag.

Even that is not fair, as the INTENT is not to kill these guys(as opposed to concentration), just to torture them for information.

Maybe its something uniquely American lol.

what the hell are they doing to the adults, serving them pita bread sandwiches with no mayo perhaps?

Hersh: children raped at Abu Ghraib, Pentagon has videos

From Daily Kos' partial transcript of a video (link to REAL stream) of Seymour Hersh speaking at an ACLU event. He says the US government has videotapes of children being raped at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

" Some of the worst things that happened you don't know about, okay? Videos, um, there are women there. Some of you may have read that they were passing letters out, communications out to their men. This is at Abu Ghraib ... The women were passing messages out saying 'Please come and kill me, because of what's happened' and basically what happened is that those women who were arrested with young boys, children in cases that have been recorded. The boys were sodomized with the cameras rolling. And the worst above all of that is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking that your government has. They are in total terror. It's going to come out."

There's also a piece worth reading in this week's Newsweek about new allegations of rape and sexual torture at Abu Ghraib. Feature includes details on the identities of the Iraqi prisoners shown in those widely-circulated photographs -- including Satar Jabar (charged with carjacking, not terrorism), whose iconic hooded figure with wires attached is derisively described by many Iraqis as the "Statue of Liberty."

I thought only repukes were stupid and prone to outrageous and vindicative remarks.

Comparing 300 prisoners to 2million dead by Pol Pot, 1+ million dead in Gulags, and 6 million Jews dead by Nazi's is now acceptable?

Rush saying the word "feminazi's" shows his stupidity. Now it's okay for us to be stupid? When was lowering ourselves to their level suddenly deemed acceptable?

I for one won't lower myself and am ashamed of Durbin's remarks.

91. WOW! No sense of proportion?
So making someone live in 100 degree heat is the same as killing 2 million people?

Read Durbin's statement! He talks about how we're torturing these people by making them live in 100 degree heat. That's NOT torture.

He's comparing that to the gassing of 6 million jews!

92. FORCING someone to live without water in high heat IS TORTURE.
Whether you want to believe it or not. The quote says "On another occasion, the had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor, with a pile of hair next to him. He had apparently been literally pulling his hair out throughout the night. On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot," (Emphasis mine.) Hell, that wasn't even Durbin's statement: he was quoting from a written report by an FBI agent.

And here's Durbin's comments on the above text, "SeekerofTruth":

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings"

I gleaned this from this link: http://talkleft.com/Gitmofloorstatement061405.pdf

And you know what? He was exactly right. In fact, he didn't say "Our troops are Nazis". He said 'look here at what our soldiers are doing in Gitmo. It's very similar to what the Nazis did and what the Soviets did.' (Not an exact quote, obviously, but if you read the entire text of his statement, rather than cherry-picking information, you'd realize this)

If you want to defend torturers, then by all mean, fucking stick up for them. But don't come bawling when we get attacked again, saying "what did we do to deserve this???" This shit wasn't born in a vacuum.

82. I read with great interest what the
right is saying, well, not saying and " the pea brains on the Right, incapable of reading the English language in its most basic, unuanced form, they claim Durbin is calling our troops Nazis. The Wingnutosphere is making that claim. Rush is making that claim. Hannity is making that claim. Drudge is making that claim. Look to Fox News to jump on the bandwagon.

Of course, what Durbin is saying is that such torture -- undisputed, by the way, and read from an FBI report -- is more at home in a place like Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany than in a modern Democracy.

And that's the truth. Plain and simple.

Remember when torture was bad? And getting rid of it was good? President Bush, Oct. 8 2003:

"Iraq is free of rape rooms and torture chambers."

Scott McClellan, Dec. 10, 2003:
"There was an announcement by the Iraqi Governing Council earlier this week about the tribunal that they have set up to hold accountable members of the former regime who were responsible for three decades of brutality and atrocities. ... We know about the mass graves and the rape rooms and the torture chambers of Saddam Hussein's regime. ... We welcome their decision to move forward on a tribunal to hold people accountable for those atrocities."

President Bush, Jan. 12, 2004:
"One thing is for certain: There won't be any more mass graves and torture rooms and rape rooms."
And let's not forget, "torture" was used as a rationale for this war -- as in, we'll invade and end the torture.
Of course, none of that has happened. The torture that was so bad under Saddam, is equally bad under U.S. command. And Dick Durbin had the balls to say it so on the Senate floor.

And these cowards -- these people who will neither serve the cause they claim is so vital, nor urge others to serve it -- now rush to defend behavior that is indefensible?"
