U.S. Warns of 'Spectacular' Taliban Acts

KABUL (Reuters) - On the second anniversary of its intervention in Afghanistan, the United States said there were signs Taliban guerrillas planned more spectacular attacks and urged Pakistan to do more to curb Islamic militants.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and ambassador designate to Kabul, told a news conference on Tuesday the fight against "terrorists" in Afghanistan was a long-term struggle.

Khalilzad said he welcomed a recent border operation by Pakistan against the Taliban and al Qaeda, but added it must do more to stop cross-border attacks by Islamic guerrillas.

"I think that's really critical," he said. "Pakistan cannot become a sanctuary for Taliban and al Qaeda people who want to attack Afghanistan," he said.

There is a new book out about the death of Daniel Pearl. It was written by a french philosopher, Bernard Henri-Levy who just spent a year in Pakistan. In an interview on PBS, he clearly states that Pakistan IS NOW a sanctuary for al Queada terrorists. He warns the United States of finding an alliance in Pakistan. He claims that President Musharraf is telling the US gov't one thing while turning a blind eye to the terrorist and their activity in his own country. Will Bushco. ever get it? (BTW, he also claims that Pakistan was working out nuclear trading deals with N.Korea)

Nah, I'm convinced that they have politicized the "war on terror" to benefit their agenda. They have no interest in defeating terror because what else would they run on? They quite happy to control the oil and hand out fat contracts to their political benefactors, whilst obstructing the public's right to know what happened on 9/11/01.

Let's recap how well they are fighting this war on terror-

(1) Not implementing cockpit security
(2) Not addressing seaport security
(3) Selling surplus equipment for CNB warfare over the net.
(4) Attacking the wrong country who did nothing to us on 9/11....but we now have a significant troop presence in Iraq that makes us less secure at home.
(5) Iraq as a profit center for Republican Party contributors.
(6) Outing by the WH of CIA agents involved in tracking terrorists and their organizations trying to acquire WMD.
(7) Asleep at the wheel on 9/11....and no tangible improvements to our security since then.

If there is another attack, the failure will rest squarely on this administration's inability to do anything but focus on their political/financial agenda.

What will we do if they do? That's not rhetorical. Our troops are spread too thin to make them listen to us with force. Right now they might be more afraid of the Taliban than us. Pakistan is unstable and conflicted, and if we threaten them, part of their military--especially the part near the Afghanistan border-- might decide that the appearance of alliance isn't worth it. A good civil war in a nation with nuclear weapons between our allies and our dearest enemies is not what we want. We are already bogged down in two quagmires (funny how people forget we are still in Afghanistan).

Damned amateurs.
