On Eve of Vote, California Race Remains Fluid
On Eve of Vote, California Race Remains Fluid

LOS ANGELES, Oct 6 -- The tumultuous ride of the California recall campaign careened to an end Monday night with the unpopular Democratic governor struggling to survive an angry electorate in Tuesday's vote and the Republican movie star fighting to rise above allegations he groped women and spoke admiringly of Adolf Hitler's speaking style.

Just a few months ago, Gov. Gray Davis (D) disparaged the recall movement as "a joke," nothing more than "political mischief" by a bunch of right-wing gadflies and talk radio jocks. But on Monday Davis stood before his supporters at a rally in San Francisco's Union Square, begging Californians, particularly Democrats, not to abandon him in his hour of need.

Davis concluded his speech by warning the crowd that Democrats need him in office if they are to beat President Bush in 2004. "My friends, this is the opening battle in the presidential battle of 2004," he said. "Democrats need me there pushing our issues."

1. We need you there if you wake up.
Lead CA my man, lead CA. Lead, follow, get out of the way, but do something. No on the recall, yes on Bustamonte!!!! When you win this thing tonight Mr. Davis I hope you come out and expose the lies of the Republicans and live up to the hope that all of your supporters have in you to be a better person. This is one hell of a shot across your bow.

And I've got the champange on ice--it's just a question of whether I'll be drinking out of joy or sorrow.
