Three guilty in 'witch' trial
3 June 2005

Two women and a man were found guilty today of cruelty to a girl who was tortured and threatened with death for being a "witch".

The eight-year-old was cut with a knife, beaten with a belt and shoe and had chilli peppers rubbed in her eyes to beat the devil out of her.

And, in a final cruel twist, she was put into a zip-up laundry bag and told she would be "thrown away" into a river, the Old Bailey heard.

The orphan was beaten until she was made to admit she had been doing witchcraft and is still traumatised by the experience.

3. I had not thought of it like that. Good observation.

2. This is one of those rare death penalty exceptions
Regardless of the reasons behind what they did,
these people need to be put down.

4. Kind of off-topic...
But it's just another example of how the US torture of detainees provides nothing but bullshit. If you beat someone enough, they will admit to anything...even witchcraft. So sad.

5. It's a good thing she didn't live in the U.S. ...
she'd have been sent to Gitmo. And the perpetrators would have been appointed to high office and confirmed by the Senate.
