Conn. to require paper record of votes
http://sacbee.com/24hour/nation/story/2449829p-10764620c.html

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Electronic voting machines in Connecticut will have to create a paper trail backup under legislation that passed in the state House Thursday by 147-0.

A spokesman for Gov. M. Jodi Rell said she will sign the bill, which was approved by the Senate last week.

... Under the legislation, voters will be able to check and correct their votes before they become permanent. The computer will create a paper receipt but will not include a voter's name or personal information. The paper records could be used in any recount.

1. Before the robber barons decimated the west coast, CA lead the way
but now it seems the NorthEast has recaptured the mantle.

Although Oregon and Washington still hold together well, the momentum has shifted to tiny states in the NE - NH, CN, VT, MA - thank you NEsters!

2. I still don't understand why we can't just use paper and pen.
I'm glad they are going to have some type of physical backup for ballots in Conn., but...

Canada has this awesome system where they use paper and pen and count the votes right in public. Ballots may not be removed from public view after they are cast. It is so transparent and verifiable.

Why can't we do this in the US?
