Bush Anxious to Learn More of Deep Throat
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said on Wednesday the disclosure that the former No. 2 official at the FBI was Watergate's "Deep Throat" source caught him by surprise and he's anxious to learn more.

"It's hard for me to judge" whether former deputy FBI Director Mark Felt provided a valuable public service or acted improperly, Bush told reporters.

"A lot of us have always wondered who Deep Throat might have been. And the mystery was solved yesterday."

Felt's revelation that he was the source for The Washington Post's reporting that helped to bring down the presidency of Richard Nixon in the early 1970s "caught me by surprise," Bush said. "It's a brand new story for a lot of us who have been wondering for a long time who he was.>>>.snip

27. I believe the timing of this correlates with the Downing St. Memo
A government unwilling to police itself. The absence of pursuit by the press. A public that might feed off of a few bravely written stories that dare to deal with the war crimes of an out-of-control administration.

Let's hear some journalists dare to make the parallel. We've got the information...Who's got the balls?

And what happened? The right wing media attacked Clarke, smeared him the same way the Shit Boat Veterans smeared Kerry.

You hit the nail on the head WI_DEM. Even if a deep throat was willing to spill the beans, who would they spill them to? The NYT? WP? FOX? CNN?

He got all the great advertising for his "real" business and if that doesn't keep him wealthy doing fun things, he can always call up an important friend in publishing and give more accurate dates and info about many things at the white place and likely other meeting places of the republicans and media elite! If not that, then a new life in a great place, until he is over 80, and no one will care!

90. Don't forget that the media at the time
did not pick this up and run with it until they couldn't avoid it. The Watergate story itself was known prior to Nixon's re-election and wasn't told except in little tiny articles in obscure areas of newspapers. Most people didn't know about it -- because the press didn't do their job until after Nixon had been re-elected and they couldn't avoid it.

15. HARD TO JUDGE?
Even Owen, Brown and Pryor would have to admit that Felt provided a safety net for our nation when Nixon and his locksmiths were stealthily picking the nation's elections' locks. There's no dilemna here, except for public servants who witness crimes and lies by our leaders and then decline to act on their moral duty both to the nation and to their God. Laws were not made to be broken by our presidents. When they are then men and women of conscience must be empowered to work around the laws that would otherwise endanger our democracy. Here's the whistle, now blow.

Where is the Iraq war's Mark Felt? To what lengths will Bush go to prevent truth from "leaking" from the new reality's pipelines?

Someone will have to bring Chimpy up to speed and tell him about the whistle-blower. Georgy was kinda of out of during that period in history. Just a thought.

34. Rush et al this morning...
I listened to Limbaugh this morning for a bit, and naturally he is tearing his hair out. Buchanan was calling for the head of Felt this morning on the Today show...both were saying that this constitutes 'treason' and should be dealt with by the death penalty and all kinds of ignorant propaganda.

The worst, though (since I don't take anything those two say seriously, this actually hit home), was their claim that Felt's actions directly cause a "genocide in Vietnam". The masters of over-reaction have topped themselves, I swear. Buchanan exlained that Felt would be dealt with in his "afterlife". Good grief.

39. I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this. Perhaps Felt will be
discredited, Woodward and Bernstein will be discredited and others will be warned not to be whistleblowers and not attempt to be investigative reporters. The timeing of this 'revelation' just seems too convenient. John Dean doesn't even believe Felt is Deep Throat. Also, with all the bloviating out there about whether or not DT is a hero or a traitor, perhaps the blivet administration will try and give Ol' Tricky Dick a make-over, maybe he wasn't really a crook, maybe it was that dishonorable, treasonous DT/Felt that brought down a sitting President for no good reason, just because he was pissed at being passed over to head the FBI. This angle is being put forward and talked about. Buchanan is spewing it all over the news. G Gordon Liddy was just on Al Franken's show talking about the Felt family just wanting the money, he called the
Vanity Fair article 'checkbook journalism'. Al straightened him out, but not strongly enough as far as I could hear. After all, Liddy is his FRIEND, wtf is up with that.

The "whistleblower" is getting dissed from quite a few quarters. In their heart of hearts, a lot of right wingers never really saw the fuss about Watergate. This view has become more prevelant with the takeover of the media by the corporate/neo-conservative agenda.

Powerful Washington types, in his dad's circles (and Bush Sr. was actually thought to be a candidate for DT at one time!).

I have an excuse for not knowing much about Watergate -- I was in primary school and was barely able to read when it happened. Dubya was in his twenties, and if he hadn't met many of the players socially, his parents probably had.

52. Nixon knew who it was and mentions him by name on the Nixon Tapes
they are gonna try and spin this as if he is a traitor or worse... of course they don't care if they can actually PROVE their assertions it's more than ENOUGH to get it in play in the MEDIA.

peace

54. rove just write's bush's parts so that average joe blow usa has a ready
mindless viewpoint to adopt. it's the same trick they used when bush was interviewed about the Plame affair... "probably won't catch the culprit" was the viewpoint they needed to instill in the masses.

66. I'll BET He Is!
George Bush is a paranoid, fearful man, but that doesn't mean people (lots of people) aren't out to get him. He's right to be paranoid and fearful--he's a criminal many times over, a traitor of the highest degree, and if (when) all hell breaks loose, there's no place for him to run (just can't goose NASA to Mars fast enough!)

George thinks that given some idea of how Nixon was brought low, he can prevent the same happening to him. Things must be getting very scary for poor George.

73. Scary
would require that he care, something that is curiously absent from incurious George. Actually, it isn't curious at all as George is a sociopath and therefore has next to nil understanding of emotions, especially anyone elses but including his own.

Also, our incurious George is kept in a bubble of yes men, so he probably doesn't have more than an inkling that he is the most hated leader of the world. It might even come as a surprise to him that he is a leader of the world. Dick might not have enlightened him on that point.

69. Yeah, I just bet he does.
Probably wants to know more in regard to how to spot future Deep Throats climbing up his own ass.

These folks are rawther big on learning from their mistakes and not making the same ones again. They learned from the Watergate affair that the thing you REALLY need to do to keep a lid on everything is to muzzle the press. Because that's the ONE key ingredient then - that's very clearly is missing now.

Don't forget to sign John Conyers' letter...

92. something i heard in *'s comments today
of course actually hearing him spit out those words was much more nausiatingly hilarious, the stupid fuck doesn't even know when watergate happened! he said something like "those of us who grew up in the 60's, uh, graduated in the 60's, blah fucking blah..." this fucking idiot manages to set new lows every day!

not to mention how insulting it is to the country that he claims to be too ignorant of the situation to even have an opinion on it. the problem is, i can't decide to believe whether he is really that stupid or not.

i can't fathom a young man, who's father headed the CIA being completely fucking ingorant of watergate.

If she wasn't dead he could call Linda Lovelace. Maybe Monica could help him out. I don't think he would need to worry about anyone doing a deep throat on him.

On the news last night, I saw dubya make comments above, but then he added another statement something like

I would like to find out more how he dealt with reporters

Yeah, I bet he would - to make sure it doesn't happen in his mis-administration!

99. Ezekial 33:6, George. Look it up, or have Karl explain it.
"But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand."

Felt provided a valuable public service. Oh that we would have someone who could provide the same service against BUSH!
