Bush blasts Amnesty report on Guantanamo
President says document is an ‘absurd report’

The Associated Press
Updated: 11:24 a.m. ET May 31, 2005

WASHINGTON - A human rights group's report about conditions at the U.S. military's prison at Guantanamo Bay is "absurd," President Bush told reporters Tuesday.

The Amnesty International report, released last week, said prisoners at the U.S. Navy base had been mistreated and called for the prison to be shut down.

The president, addressing a news conference at the White House, said the Amnesty document was an “absurd report.”

He said the allegations were based on interviews with detainees, who hated America and were trained to lie.

6. Someone needs to look back in the past
And match this with the quotes that came from various and sundry 3rd world dictators each time they were condemned for rights abuses. I remember that this was a fairly typical pattern, AI would come out with their report, and the leaders of Singapore/Uganda/Sudan/etc. would come out with a statement saying that they "never" would do such a thing, that everything they did was legit. Would be an interesting comparison....

Welcome to the 3rd world Junta club, USA!

12. Bush Calls Human Rights Report "Absurd"
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050531/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Tuesday dismissed a human rights report as "absurd" for its harsh criticism of U.S. treatment of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying the allegations were made by prisoners "who hate America."

"It's an absurd allegation. The United States is a country that promotes freedom around the world," Bush said of the Amnesty International report that compared Guantanamo to a Soviet-era gulag.

58. My favorite comment about the "Progress in Iraq":

....Bush denied any increase of strength in the Iraqi insurgency, whose deadly attacks have been on the rise since a new government was announced April 28. He said the Iraqi government would be "plenty capable of dealing with them" with the help of American training. "I'm pleased with the progress," Bush said.

NOTE: My Uncle just returned from Iraq, his second stint there in the last year where he was being paid big bucks to "train" the Iraqi troops and police...Guess what? He's been asked/begged to return - no can do...not for any amount of money...only way they are getting him back is if they forceably strap him into a C130 and take him there...

So, how again does the Dimwit called the President think that "with the help of American training" that they are going to be able to improve things there? Someone better get a memo to the idiot that even the trainers are not willing to go train...

35. It's not exactly a denial, is it?
It's just Bushco--once again--attacking the source of criticism instead of addressing the substance. It's a very legalistic response. It's a very, very bad sign for any supposedly democratic government to find themselves seriously at odds with Amnesty, whose only agenda is ferreting out and exposing institutionalized torture. They're as close to unimpeachable as such organizations get--you certainly can't fault them for having a political bias.

As a side note--except for Tony Blair, Vicente Fox, our puppet regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the bloodthirsty dictator of Uzbekistan, with what government or international institution ISN'T Bush having a public feud?

59. Appropriately timed
With all the Deep Throat chatter, I couldn't help but be reminded of a scene from "All The President's Men." In the film, there's actual news footage of Spiro Agnew reacting to a Woodward and Bernstein report...same song and dance "non-denial denial" routine they're doing today...it's outrageous...it's absurd...you must consider the source. Agnew didn't say it was untrue. Rummy didn't say it was untrue. Bush...aw shit...who cares what he did or didn't say!

The Bush Regime would be on trial

Intl. Court/

But really ... no. It isn't the fault of all the rest of us that the people of the US elected George W. Bush, and he could not likely be prosecuted in the International Criminal Court in any event.

Now, when he shows up in Canada, for instance, he can be arrested and charged and tried for war crimes and/or crimes against humanity in one of our very own Canadian criminal courts. Our Criminal Code assigns jurisdiction over such crimes, even outside Canada, to Canadian courts. But our own Attorney General has to authorize such charges, and sorry, but that's just not likely to happen. I mean, if you guys won't prosecute your own criminal politicians, it's not surprising that we aren't going to do it either.

But US federal law does the same thing, at least in respect of US nationals and members of the US military (Bush being both, I gather):
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/casecode/uscodes/18/parts/i/chapters/118/sections/section_2441.html

Section 2441. War crimes

(a) Offense. - Whoever, whether inside or outside the United States, commits a war crime, in any of the circumstances described in subsection (b), shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for life or any term of years, or both, and if death results to the victim, shall also be subject to the penalty of death.

(b) Circumstances. - The circumstances referred to in subsection (a) are that the person committing such war crime or the victim of such war crime is a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or a national of the United States (as defined in section 101 of the Immigration and Nationality Act).

(c) Definition. - As used in this section the term "war crime" means any conduct - ...
How 'bout torture? http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/casecode/uscodes/18/parts/i/chapters/113c/toc.html

The International Criminal Court is a court of last resort, where there is no national court competent to hear the case, or where the country which would otherwise have jurisdiction refuses to exercise it. No one is likely to be delivered to the ICC from such a country (e.g. Bush from the US), which has to be done if there is to be an ICC trial, so someone would have to nab him while he's abroad.

As IndianaGreen says, too bad nobody has any way of getting the charges laid domestically in the US, where Bush gives the orders in question. But no more would any of us have any way of getting our own Attorneys General and the like to do it.

Yes, it would be nice if the US weren't so rich and mighty that no one (at least no one where Bush would ever go) will ever attempt to bring him to justice. But then a whole lot of things in this world would be nicer if the US weren't so rich and mighty.

Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 12:52 PM by thecai
Quote Bush after Abu Ghraib was exposed. Which was definitely another lie, because we, The CAI - Coalition Against Injustice, et al, have reported worse abuse in American jails and prisons, for DECADES.
And just the day before Bush told this current lie, ("absurd report"), we had also emailed Bush, et al, about his ignoring abuse reports for years, including while he was Governor of Texas, one of the WORST states for inmate abuse/neglect/murder, and that we recommend Amnesty International to investigate and report on U.S. "Gulag" jails and prisons.
Bush is incapable of TRUTH.
