Iraq insurgency in 'last throes,' Cheney says (War over by 2009)
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/05/30/cheney.iraq/index.html

The insurgency in Iraq is "in the last throes," Vice President Dick Cheney says, and he predicts that the fighting will end before the Bush administration leaves office.

In a wide-ranging interview Monday on CNN's "Larry King Live," Cheney cited the recent push by Iraqi forces to crack down on insurgent activity in Baghdad and reports that the most-wanted terrorist leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, had been wounded.

The vice president said he expected the war would end during President Bush's second term, which ends in 2009.

"I think we may well have some kind of presence there over a period of time," Cheney said. "The level of activity that we see today from a military standpoint, I think, will clearly decline. I think they're in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency."

1. He also expected it over as soon as we got there. Wouldn't use
the vp as an oracle. And sure, they're in the last throes. That's why there is no place safe in Iraq. 70% unemployment. Sure doesn't leave much choice for the average person there.

5. "War Over by 2009" means
that the "liberal media coverage" of the "war" will cease to refer to it as a war.

It will be labeled a "success" by the lapdogs.

If a Dem gets in the WH, suddenly, the "insurgents" will flare up again, and all the documents discovered by the occupant will be dismissed as "fabricated" by a "person in over his(/her?) head" - and be used to say "See, you elected the wrong person!".

75. War is also over when one side goes home, declares victory in a huge lie.

Bush can't give us anything resembling a "success". All he can give us is surrender and a dose of propaganda.

That's the plan. Declare victory, bug out, and when the quisling Iraqi government falls in a civil war, blame the Iraqis.

Pretty easy for the truth to be somewhere in the middle, between this statement and Cheney's lie.

I do think the sane military leaders know we're screwed. We should've learned, insurgencies like this can last forever or at least a helluva long time.

Iraq reminds me of Lebanon in the 80's only I think on an even bigger scale.

Who would believe Cheatin Cheney, anyway?

He is so NOT believable. Why on earth would anyone pick him to be a spokesman for the White House's message on anything?

I watched Cheney during the VP debates. He was despicable, and he looked down a lot of the time (not someone who inspires faith in the listener). His voice is monotone, flat. His eyes are shifty, they twirl around in their sockets, and you just come away not believing anything he says.

Mr. Potato Head.

if he believes any of the made-up shit he's spewing. He knows goddamned well the US is building 14 permanent bases in Iraq and that there's still plenty of oil to be stolen over there no matter how many lives it costs.

27. He will NOT come out of his bunker; he will NEVER stand trial...
He is far too slick and slippery and highly-skilled in hiding in dark undisclosed locations...

Even when he finally takes the presidency in 2008, I doubt we'll see much of him... he'll probably just communicate thru an echoing disembodied voice while we stare at an image of a great fiery eye burning its unblinking gaze into the depths of our very souls...
Look, there's no point arguing; if he says the insurgency is in its last throes, then the insurgency is in its last throes...
It's his world now. We're all just his temporary guests.

Grim humor, yes... sorry...
God, I had the worst night last night. Endless nightmares.
Much like being awake these days, actually...
I don't understand how they could've done this so quickly and so effectively. I don't understand how so many cannot see this incredible horror before us all now.
And yet there it is... and no matter how they fuck up, no matter how guilty or culpable or perfectly wrong about everything they are proved, again and again, the madness continues unabated...
There seems to be about 70,000 of us who are actually awake and aware... meaning that more than 99% of our citizenry are still fast asleep, and dreaming of happy dancing cupcakes and candies...
I guess Dick can pretty much say any goddamn thing he wants. SCREW reality; they're remaking it even as we speak.

At current rates, that would come to about:

perhaps another trillion dollars spent.

And nothing to do with Ossama Bin Laden or weapons of mass destruction.

That was what U.S. military officials said of insurgents. They also liked using the phrase "They know they're losing." I have heard that expression lately.

I always say that someone like Bush doesn't deserve the White House, he deserves a 12-step program, and this state of being in denial is more proof of that. These people are, at best, incompetent, and the sooner the country faces that -- and demands competence -- the better.

40. Take heart, people -- this is proof we're withdrawing from Iraq
The bogus statements of "victory" coming from military intelligence and the White House indicate Bush has decided to withdraw the troops regardless of whether Iraq is stable. I believe Bush has already decided to withdraw half the troops before November 2006. He will house the remaining troops on 4 military bases in Iraq. Those troops will hide in their bunkers while Iraq continues to go up in flames. I'm getting optimistic that this quagmire (for America) is coming to end (but will continue for the Iraqi people, unfortunately).

In fact, when General Westmoreland announced to the American public late in 1967 that he could see "the light at the end of the tunnel"--in other words, that victory was in sight--the war had settled into a military and political stalemate, with American forces suffering ever higher rates of casualties (more than 14,000 combat deaths in 1968 alone--the highest annual figure for the entire war).

62. How convenient...four more years...
Four more years for these evil fat bastards to line their pockets, converting blood into oil into profit.

He's obviously delusional.
Must be from taking those heart meds all these years. He has definitely lost touch with reality.

67. Washington Post, Page 1, May 31, 2005: Three Bombers Kill 31 In Iraq
BAGHDAD, May 30 -- The first attacker slipped unnoticed into the gathering of police commandos, detonating explosives that tore through the crowd. As frenzied survivors dashed for the shelter of a nearby building, two other bombers ran with them before setting off simultaneous blasts Monday morning, witnesses said.

In all, the precisely coordinated assault in Hilla -- targeting police officers who were protesting a provincial governor's decision to disband their units -- killed 31 people and wounded 108, according to Muhammed Hadi, a physician at the hospital where most victims were taken.

Clearly, we have turned the corner.

71. and to think that Nazi Germany was subdued by the end of 1945!
Edited on Tue May-31-05 03:50 PM by Lisa
A regime far more vicious than Saddam Hussein's, which DID have stacks of WMDs, and had been actively training the Hitler Youth to be guerilla resistance fighters -- yet somehow the bombings, attacks on Allied troops and facilities, and intimidation of German civilians were pretty much over in a matter of months after VE day.

It would be great if Cheney's words come true and the bloodshed is over by the end of Bush's second term (even if it means that he's going to be taking credit for it). But somehow I don't think we're looking at "last throes" here.

84. Four years of last throes? Interestingly long last throe. Especially,
since it coincides with the time these bastards get out of office, plus a year to clean up enough of the mess the next president can start bringing our people home. I'm sure Bush and Cheney will have secured the oil contracts by then, as well.
