NYT: McCain Urging Accord on Bolton and Secret Documents
WASHINGTON, May 27 - One of John R. Bolton's leading Republican backers, Senator John McCain of Arizona, signaled his support on Friday for a compromise in which the White House might allow Senate leaders access to highly classified documents in return for a final vote early next month on Mr. Bolton's nomination as United Nations ambassador.

The conciliatory signal from Mr. McCain came as Senate leaders traded blame over who was responsible for the miscalculation that led to Mr. Bolton's nomination being blocked Thursday. But the White House showed no sign that the Bush administration might change course.

"The Democrats who are clamoring for this have already voted against John Bolton," Scott McClellan, the White House spokesman, said in a telephone interview. "This is about partisan politics, not documents. They have the information they need."

Appearing on the Fox News Channel, Mr. McCain reiterated his support for Mr. Bolton. He also praised an argument made by, among others, Senator Richard G. Lugar, Republican of Indiana, who has urged the administration to provide the Senate with more information related to Mr. Bolton's conduct. Senators calling on the administration to share the documents "have some substance to their argument," Mr. McCain said.

1. How many times can you sell your soul, anyway?
McCain has sold his about twenty times over. There'll be a helluva fight among the creditors over it.

5. Does Frist think Harry Reid is his Whip?
"A senior aide to Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee, the majority leader, said Friday that Dr. Frist was told by Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, his Democratic counterpart, on Wednesday that enough Democrats would join Republicans to invoke "cloture," allowing a final vote on Mr. Bolton."

Can't you guys count? I guess not.

Edited on Sat May-28-05 10:26 AM by Protagoras
All he is, is dust in the wind.

McCain isn't moderate, he's convictionless. He want's to be liked, and he want's to appear moderate, etc...but if he's about to take heat for anything...poof he disappears back into the fold.

Kerry is my friend...Bush screwed me...but I'll be a good soldier and campaign for the shrub cuz um...welll...um....Well I regret that I said, did that thing before...I wouldn't do it again or if I had to do over, oh but I have to do this thing cuz it's right...at least until I realize that it wasn't right, or enough time has passed that I'll get some mileage out of apologizing for it...yadda yadda yadda.

6. please remember
mccain was against making Martin Luther King a national holiday, took bribes in the S&L crisis, allowed his wife and child to be insulted by * and then supported *, wanted to commit U.S. troops if China invades Taiwan, and wants to send more troops into the civil war in Iraq

10. I didn't say one positive thing about McCain. The post above was
about the Republicans, including McCain, who were all stunned by the Bolton vote.

I think McCain is a opportunist slimeball, especially after how he treated Kerry during the 2004 campaign and sold his soul to Bush.

I do like it when he irritates the Republicans and increases their infighting. I'm all for that.

35. Also would not condemn the flying of the Confederate Flag
and said it should be a state matter even though that flag was flown in battle against the USA. It is the flag of an enemy of the USA and the USA needs to sound off about it. It is a flag of treason and bigotry and has no place in American society. It is nothing more than a hateful display in today's world and should be a hate crime just to fly it.

17. Mccain is more of a democrat than many dems are
Mccain was against the tax cuts, against anwr drilling, against bush's horrific global warming position, mccain is against bush's energy bill, mccain is a against defecits, against the nuclear option.

Mccain is also pro affirmative action, pro gun control on some issues.

I don't understand how anyone could not like Mccain.

There is a reason why freepers hate him he is a principled man.

Mccain was tortured as a pow, he is a war hero and stands up against republicans all the time.

Mccain is really a democrat and he probably would be one of the best presidents this nation has ever seen.

19. Bush and his Texas buddies are the filthiest people I've ever seen
McCain was doing great until Bush got scared of him. Then Bush unleashed his Texas dogs against McCain's war record, McCain's wife and her family, and his breast cancer votes. Bush is absolute filth.

McCain would have done much better to call them that, and declare himself independent. He lost a lot of respect when he didn't do that.

But that ain't saying much. His best days are behind him. If he's for Bolton, his judgement is no better than the rest of the synidicate.

Here is a guy who made a true sacrifice for his country but let himself be corrupted. He has squandered his honor and deserves being cast from civilized society.

31. Maybe, but more likely it's McCain's own ambitions that drive him.
I would think that if Bush had something big on McCain that he'd be, well, more reliable.

He supported Bush during the campeign because to not do so would be to commit political suicide within the GOP. He's a hawk--support for an aggressive foreign policy works for him--his differences with Bush have to do with matters of competence--not the conviction that attacking Iraq was a stupid thing to do. He's also a Senate traditionalist and a moderate on many issues. McCain thinks that by bucking Bush on these issues he comes across as a pragmatist and that these days this is very appealing--and let's face it--it is.

McCain, if he can get through the Republican primaries, is the GOPs strongest candidate in 2008. It'll be interesting to see whether he gained enough good will by backing Bush, a man some say he despises, to get the nomination.

36. Just keep in mind McCain is more liberal than Zell Miller , Joe Lieberman
and so goes a very long and distinguished list of Dem's and Repubs that belong to the "Money Party".

The GOP tested their new tactic of trashing politicians that have served honorably in the military on John McCain first. It worked so well, they went ahead and used it on Max Cleland and John Kerry.

John McCain also comes from Arizona, the "Clean Elections" state.
http://goodgovernment.org/cleankit.pdf

The GOP hates John McCain, just like we hated Zell Miller! Why did we leave Zell alone?

Because he simply was to powerful and entrenched, same goes for John McCain and the GOP.

Personally, I enjoy watching John make the GOP squirm like the maggots that they are.
