DETROIT -- The Vatican took action against nine local priests accused of sexual abuse, defrocking one and barring eight others from the ministry. The priests, who served parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit, have been on leave, Auxiliary Bishop Walter Hurley told the Detroit Free Press for its Friday editions.
Archdiocese officials are awaiting the Vatican's review of 14 other cases, including those of four priests who requested church trials, the newspaper reported.
The defrocked priest, Robert Quane, 60, served at nine parishes in the Detroit area.
In 2000, Quane began serving on a restricted basis after what the archdiocese said was a credible allegation of sexual misconduct with minors early in his ministry. He served as a part-time chaplain for two years, then was placed on administrative leave and restricted from any public ministry.
