Egyptian opposition rejects Laura Bush comments
CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday rejected U.S. first lady Laura Bush's interpretation of Egyptian politics, saying they could not even see the progress she was praising.

"There are no reform steps at all. The regime is still following the dictatorial and repressive method toward the Egyptian people and opposition," said Mohamed Habib, deputy leader of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood.

3. For God's sake
Let's HOPE she's running in 08!

On second thought, the right-wingers would be stupid enough to elect her.

4. Egyptian opposition rejects Laura Bush comments
CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak objected on Tuesday to U.S. First Lady Laura Bush's support for Mubarak's approach to political reform, and several said she did not know what she was talking about.

What she said is really frustrating for most opposition forces in Egypt," said Gameela Ismail, wife of opposition leader Ayman Nour and a spokeswoman for his Ghad (Tomorrow) Party.

"She seems not to know enough about Egypt. I'm really amazed," Ismail told Reuters outside a downtown cinema where police and men in plain clothes dispersed a small protest against Wednesday's referendum on the Egyptian constitution.

out in a world that is dangerous to try and gloss over how we are perceived in the rest of the world.

19. How about rephrasing that,
"she knows nothing about Egypt". That would sum it up.

I've been thinking about the photos from Laura's trip. There was one photo where she was wearing a Hajib, dark sunglasses. She was on her way to a mosque, which caused quite a bit of controversy.

She was completely surrounded by bodyguards who were pushing through the crowd to let her pass.

I saw from the photo that she was crouched down. Her dark sunglasses made her look like a fugitive. The ring of paid people surrounding her madee the whole scene look surreal.

I couldn't help thinking, "is this a person who's welcome in the Middle East? Someone who has a good reputation, can help heal the wounds.

It was a terrible, deplorable scene, right out of a movie.

Mohamed Habib, deputy leader of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood, said Mubarak, who works closely with the United States, had earned no praise.

"There are no reform steps at all. The regime is still following the dictatorial and repressive method toward the Egyptian people and opposition," he said.

If you Egyptians have a beef about Laura making even more enemies for the USA, pick your fight with the man who stands behind her: Karl Rove. George Bush is busy out riding his bike just now and cannot be bothered, and anyway "who cares what you think."

Laura is just being a good soldier in the BFEE's International SuperLame Diplomatique Squad, after all.

17. Mubarak has been in charge since SADAT was assassinated
In what? 1979? Twenty-six years? And this pretends to be a democratic arrangement? I mean, please.

Now, needless to say some of these opposition groups are scarier than all git out, but still. Anyone who claims that Mubarak stays in power through the free choice of the Egyptian people is an imbecile. The guy is a classic strongman in an Armani suit.

20. They have elections and he wins every time
They have a press and it seems that the press has no end of praise for the programs and policies of mubarak.

Sounds a bit like the kind of democracy we have here.

18. the opposition got angry when George "promoted democracy" in the Middle
East.
"No, no! Don't promote democracy!" yelled the democracy activist.
Guess they won't be as pliant for a Puce or Taupe or Fuchsia Revolution or whatever.
