1. Well, I know why US Airways wants this, but WHY AM West?
I haven't heard much about AM West for a while, but last I heard they were at least breaking even if not making at least some $$. US AIrways is close to a dead dog!

4. sister-in-law works for US Air
I have found that it is cheaper for me to fly Jet Blue, regular booked flights, than my sister-in-law's US Air Standby "Buddy Pass". Which would you choose?

See why they cannot compete?

7. I work 10 minutes from Pgh Int'l Airport and sometimes it is cheaper
to drive to Cleveland than to fly USAir. I know exactly what you mean.

5. "Nationwide" airline, my 'okole
no translation necessary.

Neither airline serves Hawai'i, unless you count codeshare partners.

Question: What do freequent fliers of such an airline do with their miles? Is that where the codeshare comes in?

6. Maybe feast on each others workers' pension plans.
That's all I can see - it may be the next big breakthrough in capitalist economic theory.
