Md. Cardinal to Boycott Giuliani Speech
BALTIMORE (AP) - Cardinal William Keeler will not attend a Jesuit university commencement because keynote speaker Rudolph Giuliani, a Catholic, supports abortion rights, an official said Wednesday.

Giuliani, the Republican former New York City mayor mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2008, is expected to award some 1,600 degrees and certificates at Friday's commencement at Loyola College of Maryland.

He also is to receive an honorary degree.

Friday's graduating class entered the school one week before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said Loyola spokesman Mark Kelly.

``The attacks had a huge effect on this class, many of whom are from New York,'' Kelly said late Wednesday. ``The college selected Mayor Giuliani because of his courage and leadership after the attacks.''

1. The Catholic Church is on a path of self-destruction.
They keep whittling away at their base. They need money to survive. They'll soon be forced to start selling off assets as there won't be much in the way of parishioners filling the churches and the offering plates.

2. Gee...
I saw the thread title and thought for one deranged minute that maybe the Catholic hierarchy had decided they should make a stand against public immorality like leaving your wife, living openly with a girlfriend, and remarrying after divorce, which last I checked they still thought was a mega sin.

Silly me ...

4. No such luck
That would mean that the Church actually was consistent in its application of values and such. Besides, Giuliani a man and therefore a superior being, doesn't need watching over like those evil abortin' women.

6. ????????
So

Abortion rights=Evil

Adultery=Acceptable
Divorce=Acceptable

Now I realize that not all Catholics march in lockstep with the church, and should not be painted with a broad brush.

8. More threats to the Church...
"It's never too late for a Catholic institution to uphold its identity," said Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society, an organization dedicated to the "renewal" of the nation's 220 Catholic colleges and universities.

In all, the group has asked 18 schools--including St. Xavier University on the city's Southwest Side--to rescind their invitations to an eclectic group of speakers that includes Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, both potential presidential hopefuls.

The list also includes author Jacquelyn Mitchard, actress Cicely Tyson, California Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer and journalist Cokie Roberts. The honorees have all publicly supported abortion rights, gay marriage, the ordination of women as priests or embryonic stem cell research.
