Protesters scale nuclear reactor
GREENPEACE activists climbed onto the reactor dome of a Dutch nuclear power plant today and painted a crack on it to underline the dangers of nuclear power."About 30 people disguised as radioactive waste containers entered the plant. Four or five of them climbed the dome of the plant and painted a crack on it," said Esther Boot, a police spokeswoman in the region of the Borssele plant in the south west of the country.

The activists who succeeded in climbing the plant will be charged with destroying property, Boot said, adding that the other members of the group had already left the plant.Greenpeace said in a statement that nuclear plants "produce waste that threaten life, and are a target for possible terrorist acts".

The Borssele plant is due to close down in 2013, but Greenpeace claims the government plans to keep it open because closing it would be more costly than to keep it running. "The government must invest more in reliable energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass, that do not change the climate," the environmentalist group said.

1. What property was destroyed?
You can crash a small airliner into one of those structures without destroying it. A few pints of paint will never harm it.

8. I'll hazard a guess they busted a padlock or cut a chain link fence

Every nuclear reactor I've seen has some kind of perimeter security to keep idiots away from it. They got in SOMEHOW, and I doubt it was accomplished without damaging something.

5. Nuclear isn't a replacement for oil or a supplement even...
Its a potential replacement for Coal(Peak in less than half a century) and Natural Gas(Peak-time generators, hard to import, peaking now on this continent). Nuclear can never be portable enough to use for transportation, except as a source of energy for battery chargers or splitting hydrogen in fuel cells. To give another example, solar probably isn't practical for transportation either, however, it can be used for the same basic purposes as Nuclear, but with other drawbacks, just like every other power source used in the world. The point being that, while I don't necessarily agree with Greenpeace's activity in this regard, or even their postion, one thing is true however, we have far too long relied on too few varieties of sources of energy that at this point in time, it would only be logical to diversify them as much as possible. This would have two goals, one to leave as small a foot print as possible on the ecology of the planet, and second to also to create a sustainable economy.

9. You can generate artificial hydrocarbons via nuclear power
Or solar or wind, for that matter. One popular fuel discussed at length over on the Environment forum is DME, dimethyl ether. It can be used as a replacement for diesel fuel and possibly for gasoline engines with some modifications.

10. We're going to suffocate in our own exhaust if we don't get off ...
the fossil fuels. Demand for energy world wide is going to keep rising. It would be nice if solar and wind and other renewable's could cover our needs but it just isn't going to cut it. That is especially true if we have to start heating homes solely on electricity.
