Iraq to Confiscate Property of Insurgency Supporters
Iraq to confiscate property of insurgency supporters

New measures to fight insurgency include freezing assets, banning from speaking on the air.

BAGHDAD - The Iraqi government said Tuesday it will soon introduce new measures to fight the insurgency, allowing for the confiscation of property of people accused of abetting the rebels.

Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari's spokesman Leith Kubba told reporters that the measures to be implemented "soon" would "hold accountable anyone who doesn't inform authorities about threats to national security".

He did not detail the measures, but said they would involve confiscation of property, and would not be directly related to measures already in place under the state of emergency.

The government last week extended for another 30 days the state of emergency, which allows for curfews and the issue of arrest warrants, because of the continuing violence which has claimed close to 500 lives this month alone.

"Allowing for the confiscation of property of people accused of abetting the rebels." Due process? A right to face one's accusers? Innocent until proven guilty? Must be some of those "quaint" provisions of the constitution that our Attorney General finds so pesky. This is sure to get those darned Iraqis greeting us with flowers and candy!

Who's the genius in charge of this fucking circus?

4. So, we kill civilians, steal their property, and leave the remaining
citizens with very little water or electricity. How is this different from Saddam? Oh, yeah, Saddam gave them water and electricity. How wonderful the USA is.

5. 1. No one knows who the insurgents even are. 2. So there's no way
they know who supports the insurgents -other than it's very obviously the vast majority of Iraqis.

3. There won't, of course, be any trial to determine if someone actually is a supporter, they'll just take all the "insurgent supporter's" stuff.

4. Which will enrage yet more Iraqis.

5. Creating more insurgents.

Round, round we go....

Kind of an exaggeration -- but my first thought! Go after those you think might maybe oppose you.

8. No potential for vicious mischief there!
Whatdya know! Almost everyone in Iraq will be named as a supporter of "insurgents," and will have to go stand out in the street, as his/house will be taken.

Pretty smooth way of getting revenue for the U.S. puppet government. Maybe Bush will have Haliburton build many, many baseball complexes.

Lotsa profit for the thieves who are running the show.

"hold accountable anyone who doesn't inform authorities about threats to national security".

So-----Guess you'll have to tattle on the Occupying forces?

Everything is now Iraq to... as if There were an autonomous country. CIA quisling to... would be the reality.

9. This act should be opposed
It should be opposed regardless of what one thinks of insurgency. It should be opposed because laws such as this are almost invariably abused and become tools to confiscate property of innocent people and place it in the hands of corrupt officials.

11. I agree, this will only make a bad situation worse.
There have been numerous reports on the level of corruption in Iraq. Now they have granted themselves even more power. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Imagine the squabbles and feuds that will result in someone dropping a dime (I'm that old), accusing someone of supporting the insurgency.:(

Civil War Style, American way? We have to get out of this, we the "people" have to stop this.

This is a runaway locomotive with who knows how many cars behind it. This just has to stop. PLEASE! Bring our people home. They just are not our kids, they are moms, they are dads they are grandpas and grandmas. For heavens sake, please!! Make this stop, we have to. No one else can but us, that means you and me and all the rest of "us".

WE HAVE TO! THIS IS STILL A GOVERNMENT BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE.
Time is short and is of the essence.

Our "founding fathers" knew what they were doing. Believe it or not.

This plan must have come right from the top.

Let's see, if you don't report it, you support it. I guess fear of reprisals plays no role at all.

Just when you thought life in Iraq couldn't get any worse.

26. Note: you only need be "accused", not convicted, of any crime...
... to have your property confiscated. This is otherwise known as strongarm, govt-sanctioned thievery.

I wonder if this "property" would include the homes of the families and/or relatives of suspects? And wouldn't that be in violation of the GC? Ah well, this is American-style democracy for Iraq, where things like the Geneva Convention are mere inconveniences.

27. How are they going to confiscate property in Iraq?
Outside of the "Green Zone", i've been recently told by a reliable source here in OZ, is the "Wild West". There is no Coalition control. A large number of US troops might control a small area for all of five minutes, then leave. Is this control?
