Liquor chief calls for law against all wine shipments
Michigan wine lovers hoping a newly issued U.S. Supreme Court ruling might open the door to wine purchases from out-of-state vineyards shouldn't uncork their enthusiasm quite yet.

In reaction to Monday's court decision, Michigan Liquor Control Commission Chairwoman Nida Samona said she'll ask state lawmakers to ban all in-state as well as out-of-state shipments of wine.

"There shouldn't be any shipment of wine or any other alcohol product through the Internet, the mail or any other form," Samona said. "It should be purchased directly, face-to-face."

2. "Do it for the CHILDREN!"
who all drink beer. :eyes: Teens are not likely to pay the price for decent wines shipped to their homes. But that will be the argement.

Boones Farm is not the sort of wine people buy and ship in. :puke:

Kids tend to drink whatever beer they can grab and run.

5. 'scuse me?
Now what did I do? Concern over possible sales to minors was part of Clarance Thomas' dissent argument. And it is silly.

Kids are not likely to plan far enough in advance of a party and shell out the $$ that wines sold via mail/internet tend to cost PLUS shipping and handling PLUS the fact that some states require people to buy a tax permit to make up for lost state revenue on out of state purchased.

They will frame the argument against shipped wine purchase as a way of prevent kids from drinking. But that is BS.

11. Liquor distributors, monopolies,
campaign comtirbutions... that sort of thing? ;)

Do it for the children is usually the mantra of people cashing checks from interested parties who are the ones seeking protection.

9. The motivation is money.
The Michigan Liquor Control Board member knows very well that minors do not order wine and spirits over the internet. The shipping charges alone would argue against that. And the freight companies do not deliver unless a 21+ year-old signs for the delivery.

But there are special, small-availability wines and spirits that are not available in a lot of stores that people would be willing to buy on the internet. Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and a few other states, which control the sale of spirits like old Eastern European government-monopoly retail stores, carries very few of these rare products.

These Liquor Commissions, which survive only because of the patronage jobs they offer the governor's party, should be abolished.

10. It would be interesting to know WHY she thinks this.
Sounds suspiciously like some form of puritanism.
