MSNBC Reporting ALITALIA FLIGHT diverted to Bangor ME
Was headed to Boston. Another "Cat Stevens" evolution. They said that the guy was on the no-fly, but they let him on the plane anyway.

No link yet, will look for one and add it.

1. Wonder how the people

of Bangor feel? I mean, after all, the plane is too dangerous to be let into OTHER US Airspace but it's okay to land it in Maine.....are the people of Maine considered expendable by the good folks at Homeland Security?

Every plane with the "Cat Stevens" problem is diverted to Bangor......

24. Apparently So
I heard during the Air France fiasco last week that it was because Boston's air space was much more crowded. By the time they are finished with the recent BRAC closings the coast will be pretty much unprotected as well so apparently our value is considered at the bottom of the barrel!

Are they helping Stephen King write a new novel or something?

12. Bangor is the first US airport these flights would hit.
They come in on a Great Circle route that brings them into US airspace over Maine.

Bangor has a tremendously long runway. It used to be a SAC base, I believe.

Ironically, the FAA wants to stop 24 hour staffing of the tower at Bangor.

25. Jet From Italy to Boston Diverted to Maine
Jet From Italy to Boston Diverted to Maine

Tuesday May 17, 2005 5:31 PM

BOSTON (AP) - An Alitalia jet en route from Milan, Italy, to Boston was being diverted to Bangor, Maine, on Tuesday because the name of a passenger on board matched that of a person on the U.S. government's no-fly list, officials said.

Flight 618 had been due to arrive in Boston about 1 p.m., Alitalia spokeswoman Marta-Marie Lotti said. Instead, it was due at Bangor between 12:30 and 1 p.m., Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Yolanda Clark said.

The TSA is ``working with Alitalia to determine how the passenger was allowed to board the aircraft,'' Clark said. The nationality of the passenger was not immediately known.

<snip>

It was the second time in less than a week that a Boston-bound European flight was diverted to Bangor. On Thursday, an Air France flight from Paris landed there because someone on board had nearly the same name and birth date as a person on the list of suspected terrorists.

28. Remember the 'Iron Curtain' and the 'Bamboo Curtain'?
I have been thinking the junta is putting them up around areas which might be hot beds of liberal thinking. They differently want to stop the flow of info and ideas.

Crrent policies on air flight security and the airlines paying so much for fuel that they are going broke sure seem to be making people re-think air travel. Hmmm, and Amtrak $$ and service being cut, gas prices going up to where the poor won't be able to drive and $$ for public transportation just cut from a spending bill. They want the serfs to stay home and not mingle! Much easier to keep a lid on things when the peasants can't move and don't know what is going on in the next valley.

Inexpensive merchandise is not the only thing presently imported from China.

27. One question why do they choose Bangor ME?
Edited on Tue May-17-05 12:00 PM by gordianot
I wonder if they consider that Northern most State expendable. I mean if there was actually a suitcase nuclear weapon they would take out Maine or maybe go on to crash in Canada. Seems a little odd they chose Maine.

Been watching too many Segall movies.

42. Boston-bound flight diverted; FBI calls it a false alarm
Another false alarm and the "news" networks had an excuse to cut away from Galloway. Cripes!!!

http://news.mainetoday.com/apwire/D8A53M601-136.shtml

Flight 618 landed shortly before 1 p.m. at Bangor International Airport, where one passenger was removed from the plane along with his luggage. The plane took off again about an hour later and was due to land in Boston around 2:45 p.m.

The man was questioned at the airport by the FBI, which decided not to arrest him, spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said. She said the case was being referred to federal immigration officials, but declined to comment further.

The nationality of the passenger was not immediately known.

A Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman said nothing unusual had occurred during the flight. But Canadian fighter jets escorted the flight through that country´s air space, and two F-15 Eagles from Otis Air National Guard base on Cape Cod escorted it through U.S. air space to Bangor.

And remember, Otis is slated to close so where will these fighter jets come from then?
