McCain Says Fight Over Filibusters Might Endanger Bush's Agenda
May 15 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Senator John McCain said the fight between Democrats and Republicans over Senate rules of debate on judicial nominees may jeopardize initiatives including President George W. Bush's proposal to revamp Social Security.

``There's a number of other compelling issues, whether it be deficit reduction or the war on terrorism, Iraq, many other legislative items'' that would get stalled by the fight over filibusters, McCain said today on ABC's ``This Week'' program. <snip>

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the second-ranking Republican in the chamber, said on the ``Fox News Sunday'' program he believes Frist has a majority of votes in the chamber and may swing a few Democrats who want to end the stalemate.

Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois, the deputy Democratic leader, said in the same interview that his party is united and may pick up at least four Republican votes for their stance. In addition to McCain, Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island has said he won't vote for a rule change. <snip>

8. dduuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Is that not what the filibuster is for? To keep the powerful (and stupid and evil) from running roughshod over the weak ?

I have lost what little respect for McCain I had.

11. We need to write our Senators about this now!!!!!! I did!!!!
Dear Senator Voinovich,
Thank you so much for listening to ALL Ohioians, instead of just the ones you have as your base.
There are many of us that are born and raised in this State of ours, that aren't as conservative in our beliefs, but are as concerned with being respected Americans.
Thank you for standing up and showing a need to check into the nomination of Mr. Bolton, to the U.N.Ambassador post.
Although I would have LOVED a NO vote, I do appreciate the opening of some eyes into the subject.
My father served in WWII and Korea in the USMC and taught me a great LOVE of our Freedom, which is what he fought for.
I still want my Children and Grandchildren to enjoy the same as my Father allowed me to.
The Filibuster is one way to ensure that Freedom, by not giving one side, a "free ticket", to promote their side, or have a hands-down ruling.
As you know, we need at least TWO sides to have a Democracy.
Thank you for your time,
From a fellow Ohioian that Loves Freedom...
