Phil Donahue reminisced about starting his career at KYW radio in Cleveland, Ohio, as an announcer and transforming into a newsman. He talked about the days when one company owned one radio station, instead of today, when one company can own 1,200 stations.
"If a station got sick of my show, we could sell the show to the station across the street," said Donahue, who believes that would be harder today with media outlets merging.
That was among a range of topics that centered on the question, "Can the Freedom of the Press Survive Media Consolidation?" The two-day conference, sponsored by the University of Illinois and hosted Wednesday at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, featured television, newspaper and radio representatives. They offered their take on the current state of media.
Seymour Hersh views media problems as coming from the bosses of the print and broadcast news divisions.
