Social Security Hearing Takes Partisan Turn

House Democrats turned a hearing on Social Security into a forum for fresh criticism of President Bush on Thursday, repeatedly accusing him of seeking to privatize the program and cut benefits for million of retirees.

"The level of ignorance is pretty deep here," protested Rep. Jim McCrery, R-La. "I'm beginning to think it's on purpose."

But his complaint did nothing to stem the Democratic assault. "You don't like the term. I'm sorry. It's privatization," said Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich.

The partisanship erupted at the first in a series of Ways and Means Committee hearings that majority Republicans say will lead to write legislation on Social Security and other retirement issues.

3. "Takes a partisan turn". Oh, those bad democrats.
Everything was so non-partisan until the dems showed up.

In fact, the first non-partisan move this admin ever made was to ask democrats to join it in destroying SS and taking the heat for it. Thanks, but if that's the only non-partisan issue available, skip it.

5. AP: White House Leaves Disbled Benefits Open
WASHINGTON -- Future Social Security retirement benefits for disabled workers is a matter for negotiations with Congress as it drafts solvency legislation, the Bush administration said Thursday, declining to say whether they should be raised, lowered or left unchanged.

...

..."President Bush needs to stop misleading the American people and come clean about the details of his privatization scheme," said DNC spokesman Josh Earnest. "Under his scheme, the only thing that Americans will be leaving to their children is trillions in debt and reduced benefits."

Isn't that a great name for a DNC spokesperson?: Josh Earnest :D
