Militants Kill Two Security Officers in Iraq; Three U.S. Soldiers Killed in Roadside Attacks

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Militants assassinated a general and a colonel who were en route to work Thursday, and a car bomb exploded near a busy market and movie theater in eastern Baghdad, part of a wave of attacks that killed at least 24 people, including three U.S. soldiers, and wounded more than 70, authorities said.

The violence comes despite a major U.S. offensive aimed at followers of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Iraq's most-wanted terrorist, in a remote desert region near the Syrian border said to be a staging ground for some of the deadliest attacks.

Two U.S. Marines were killed and 14 wounded when an explosive device hit their troop transport vehicle during the offensive Wednesday. At least five Marines and as many as 100 insurgents have been killed in all in Operation Matador, which entered its fifth day Thursday.

Elsewhere, three American soldiers were killed and one was injured in separate roadside bombings.

It appears to me the our Compliant Media is avoiding the obvious: the insurgent offensive has given them the initiative and the upper hand. Right now they are winning, right now they have learned how to sustain a prolonged and successful attack over large areas of Iraq, and how to kill our soldiers whenever they venture out of their secure bases. Operation Matador is not putting a dent in their operations, quite the contrary, it is proving that our tactics are not working, that our operational assumptions are wrong, that our vastly superior firepower is, once again, ineffective against a determined insurgency that has the broad support of the population.


It is time to go home. It is time we stopped killing these people and left them alone.
