N.Y. Governor to Announce Ground Zero Plan
Thursday May 12, 2005 4:16 PM

By ERIN McCLAM

Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Gov. George Pataki is appointing his chief of staff to oversee the rebuilding of ground zero and is earmarking $300 million for the Sept. 11 memorial at the site.

Pataki was formally announcing the initiative in a speech Thursday to the Association for a Better New York, his office said in a statement in advance of the speech.

The effort to rebuilt at the World Trade Center site has been stalled by security concerns and other problems.

Chief of Staff John Cahill will coordinate the efforts of agencies including the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Department of Transportation, the statement said. He also will serve as point person on the negotiations with Silverstein Properties, leaseholder of the trade center site, and city and police officials.

1. THREE HUNDRED MILLION!
Edited on Thu May-12-05 10:54 AM by iconoclastNYC
This is just gross. What are they going to build an amusement park?

This 911 grief-fetish industry gives me the willies.

Can't we do a memorial for 3 million? It seems like enough to me.

This has got to be a boondoggle. It's just obscene.

2. Really dislike the "new" name for the WTC
Every time I read "Freedom Tower," I see Shrub's smirk and can't help but feel he and all his ilk really see this project as a huge monument to "their way." (Republicans have so perverted the word freedom, when it comes from them, it sounds like a threat.)

I suspect that true New Yorkers will never refer to it as "Freedom Tower," but always as the World Trade Center.

3. Just like I would never refer to
the airport in DC as #$)%^& airport..it will always be National.

Wonder if pataki thinks this is going to boost his ratings?

7. Yes...you get Orweillian names for buildings when the Governor is a Repug
When we throw the fascists out of office maybe we'll have a watershed movement where were rename shit like this to something that doesn't prop up the fascist regime.

Like blowing up the statues of lenin and stalin.

5. I also saw his popularity rating from YESTERDAY. It was _LOW_.
At $300 million, it won't be easy to get his number back up.
