If Cuba has its way, the name Luis Posada Carriles will soon be as familiar to Americans as Osama bin Laden, and just as loathed.

President Fidel Castro has called on Cubans to take to the streets next Tuesday to demand the Bush administration arrest the 77-year-old Posada and a few other Cold War relics roaming the Miami area.

-

Castro, in a series of recent televised speeches, has said that when the people of the United States understand the Posada issue they will demand justice, just as he said they overwhelming supported efforts to unite young castaway Elian Gonzalez with his father in Cuba over protests from Miami's Cuban-American community.

"They have committed an extremely serious error, like the one they committed with Elian Gonzalez, when we fought without respite until they returned the boy," Castro recently said of efforts to make the United States Posada's new home.

Around 1,000,000 Cubans are expected to protest in front of the US interests section in Havana next week.

1. Here is an interview transcript with the reporter....
...Ann Louise Bardach, one of the few U.S. reporters ever to have conducted an in-person extensive interview with Luis Posada Carriles:

2. Would Cuba turn over somebody we wanted as a suspected terrorist?

3. Cuba wants the US to extradite Posada to Venezuela..
.. according to US/Venezuelan extradition treaty agreement.

Cuba is not asking for Posada to be turned over to Cuba.

The US and Cuba have no such extradition agreements.

4. People assume everyone is as uninformed as they are, it seems.

Most DU'ers who've read anything realize US policy toward Latin America and the Caribbean is nothing to be proud of.

You're definitely correct in pointing out the U.S. does NOT have an extradition agreement with Cuba. That can be remedied easily once we get an American President who doesn't have his head lodged.

On edit: Your comments yesterday on Assata S. were appropriate. I just read she had been a target of COINTELPRO (along with so very many others).

5. Yet another pro normalization argument.
Oh, wait.. the USGOP is harboring (openly, in Miami) many dozens of terrorists that Cuba wants.

Did you know that when Ileana Ros Lehtinen was running for her first time for her office that JEB was her campaign manager. and that JEB's winning campaign strategy and motto for her was "Free Orlando Bosch" who was in jail for a probation violation (for bazooka-ing a Polish freighter in Miami harbor). A full capacity crowd filled the Orange Bowl for her "Free Orlando Bosch" rally, and then the City of Miami created an official Orlando Bosch day and renamed a street in his name. He was released upon request by his lawyer, Raoul Cantero III (Batista's grandson). Mr Cantero has since been appointed to the Fla appeals court by JEB.

Miami's exile politics is a web of liars and terrorist supporters.

:puke:

Absolutely! DU'ers who haven't heard about it have a real eye-opening experience ahead if they start doing searches on Miami Cuban "exile" politics. It's astonishing how much rough and dirty stuff they've perpetrated from the moment the Batista villains started showing up.

I heard Ros-Lehtinen say on a cable news show that when her family got here right after the revolution in Cuba, they assumed they'd only be here a short time, and the U.S. Government would overthrow the Cubans, and they'd simply go right back.

They didn't seem to understand that Cubans wanted Batista related government, business, and mafia people to get the hell outta there. THEY were the problem.

People can see their horrific handiwork in Florida politics, and ponder how they helped turn Miami, at one time, into the FBI's designated "terror capital of the United States," and a multiple winner of the category named by U.S. Census as the "poorest large city in the United States over 500,000 population."
