By many accounts, Miami-Dade Police records custodian Bill Hanlon has long tried to seek redemption for his role in Arthur McDuffie's tragic end in 1980, when police beat the black insurance agent to death after a chase.

Granted immunity by prosecutors, Hanlon became a key prosecution witness against four of his fellow officers charged in connection to the beating death, but who 25 years ago next week were acquitted by a Tampa jury.

Hanlon, a longtime supervisor with the department's Records Unit, used the county's tuition reimbursement plan to put himself through law school and graduated from Nova Southeastern University in 2001, police personnel records show.

But his plans of becoming a lawyer were quashed by the state's Board of Bar Examiners, which has denied him a license twice for his involvement in McDuffie's death and the subsequent efforts to cover up the fatal pummeling.
