U.S. Senate to examine FEMA aid fraud

A U.S. Senate committee will have a hearing next week on allegations of waste and fraud in the federal government's disaster assistance program.

Testimony will focus on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's response to the 2004 hurricanes and "whether there was a breakdown of safeguards against fraud and abuse," according to a statement released by the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

The session is set for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Room 562 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.

The hearing is part of a four-month Senate investigation, prompted by reports in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that Miami-Dade County residents collected millions of dollars for home repairs and damaged property attributed to Hurricane Frances, a storm that made landfall more than 100 miles to the north. The Miami-Dade county experienced only thunderstorm-like conditions.
