Canadian consul told Arar not to fear deportation
Last Updated Wed, 11 May 2005 21:21:39 EDT
CBC News

OTTAWA - The only Canadian official to visit Maher Arar while he was detained by U.S. authorities told him not to worry about being deported – five days before he was sent to Syria on terrorism allegations.

Maureen Girvan, who was with the Canadian consulate in New York when Arar was arrested in the fall of 2002, said she dismissed the possibility of deportation – even though he told her he had been warned it was possible.

"You should be reassured," Girvan said she told Arar.
