Senate Panel Probing Bolton Down to Wire
Edited on Wed May-11-05 09:35 PM by deminks
WASHINGTON - The Senate on Wednesday kept up an investigation of John R. Bolton on the eve of a showdown vote on the troubled nominee to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Democrats who claim he is too hotheaded or unbending say they could try to hold up a final vote in the full Senate.

A Senate committee held private interviews with two State Department officials who worked with Bolton in his current job as the department's arms control chief. The Democrat who is leading the opposition to Bolton said he is asking the nominee directly for additional information.

The committee planned a lengthy debate, largely on the Democrats' accounting of three weeks of inquiry into Bolton's conduct and fitness for the job.

The committee's top Democrat, Sen. Joseph R. Biden (news, bio, voting record) Jr. of Delaware, and Sen. Christopher Dodd (news, bio, voting record), D-Conn., said it is possible that Bolton's nomination could be blocked by a Democratic filibuster in the full Senate.

1. Biden says "it's possible"
But in the end, you know he'll bend over for the GOP. Always does.

2. Too true.
And too sad. Threats from GOP-lite Biden are toothless.

3. Send the raw story to each member of the committee.
I did today, nothing like forced sex,
that sells to the public.
In Plato's retreat.

5. This is all win-win
If he wins, he loses. If he loses, he loses. This guy's career is over. Some super rich thug will give him a job, but as a political player, he's over.

6. That headline is irony unchained
and set free! Today, Rawstory breaks their news and then this...

Hopefully, Dems will understand the need to make a case for moral authority at the UN and Bolton has not at home or on the job!

10. Bolton probe continues on eve of vote (Dems Consider Filibuster!)
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate on Wednesday kept up an investigation of John R. Bolton on the eve of a showdown vote on the troubled nominee to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Democrats who claim Bolton is too hotheaded or unbending say they could try to hold up a final vote in the full Senate.

The committee's ranking Democrat, Sen. Joseph Biden Jr. of Delaware, and Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut said it is possible Bolton's nomination could be blocked by a Democratic filibuster in the full Senate.

"It is not my intention to do that, but it depends on how this plays out," Biden said.

Added Dodd: "It's certainly a real possibility."

11. POSSIBILITY???? It damn well should be a CERTAINTY!!!
The $#!t-storm is on their side right now. It's about time they realized opportunity like this doesn't come around EVERY day! Personally, I will be sorely disappointed if they cannot rally around this issue!

13. We Shouldn't Filibuster Bolton
I think Bolton is horribly, horribly unqualified for this position. I think he is a mean spirited person with the diplomatic skills of Genghis Khan.

But, let us send him to the U.N. And let the rest of the world laugh at us and refuse to cooperate with us. And when Bolton pitches a temper tantrum, they won't give a crap. For the Conswervatives, it will be a self fulfilling prophesy. They accuse the U.N. of being useless and anti US. The U.N. isn't, they just don't kiss our ass. But we send Bolton there, and they really will be anti US and won't help us with anything.

Most world leaders have some grasp of our political system and know many Americans don't agree with our current administration, so I think most of them won't hold it against us. And Bolton is gone in four years.

Judges are a different story. We should filibuster Right Wing Judicial Activists from lifetime appointments because they will make decisions that impact Americans' everyday lives for generations. But four years?

Sometimes I wonder if Dubya is really so divorced from reality as to think Bolton is a good nominee or if he is laughing and telling the U.N. to sod off since they wouldn't help us oust Hussein.

14. The U.N. may not kiss our ass, but they turn us a blind eye.

15. In 4 years Bolton will help usher in a war with Iran
...I could only imagine the havoc he will cause - 4 minutes in the UN is too long. The definition of the UN is that of a humanitarian organization. Bolton, Bush and crew don't give a crap about humanity. They are just greedy, egocentric, hypocrits whose only goals are lining the pockets of their cronies and saving their own asses. Whew.. that felt good. BTW a good friend is executive director of our local UNA and word is nobody wants him there. What normal person would want to go to a job everyday where nobody liked or respected them?

16. We're Going To War With Iran Anyway
I mean, Dubya could appoint a U.N. ambassador who makes Ghandi look like a hawk but if the Republicans want war with Iran, we're going to war with Iran.
