Bechtel tapped to run Los Alamos lab

The University of California announced Wednesday it will partner with San Francisco-based Bechtel Corp. in its bid to keep its six decade-old contract to run Los Alamos National Laboratory, the nation's premier nuclear weapons complex.

The university is in danger of losing its $2.2 billion annual contract with the Energy Department to manage the New Mexico lab because of a series of security lapses and management failures over the past few years.

The announcement was the clearest signal yet that the university plans an aggressive bid to keep the contract, although the UC Board of Regents must formally vote to authorize any bid.

Several major defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, are putting together their own teams to compete to take over management of Los Alamos.
