SAN DIEGO (AP) - Facing the prospect of a blot on his record, a Bronx-born Navy sailor turned anti-war activist seemed unfazed about his trial for refusing to board a Persian Gulf-bound ship.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Pablo Paredes faced charges of unauthorized absence and missing movement at his special court-martial Wednesday. He has pleaded not guilty. snip
"The president of the United States has a DUI under his belt," Paredes said in a recent interview, referring to the president's 1976 drunken driving arrest in Maine. "I think I'll make it with a misdemeanor."
At the time, Paredes told reporters he did not want to be part of a war he views as both illegal and immoral. He says his military training has taught him to avoid what he views as a war crime.
