Suicide bombings kill at least 50 in Iraq
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Three suicide bombings killed at least 50 people across Iraq on Wednesday as insurgents pressed on with an escalation of attacks.

In the deadliest attack, a suicide car bomber blew up his vehicle in Tikrit among a crowd of mainly Shi'ite migrant workers from southern Iraq who had gathered to try to find work on construction sites. Police said at least 27 people were killed and more than 60 wounded in the blast.

In the town of Hawija, southwest of the strategic oil city of Kirkuk, a man strapped with explosives walked into an army recruitment center and blew himself up, killing 19 people and wounding 25, police said.

A suicide car bomb also exploded outside a police station in the southern Baghdad suburb of Dora, killing at least four people and wounding dozens, police said.

2. And why are we there?
Bring our troops home now. I guess Bush has already put Iraqis on the federal teat where we will rebuild their country and give them health care which we deny our own. On the bright side, Halliburton and the energy companies have never had greater profits. Cheney is smiling ear to ear. They just have one problem. American kids are refusing to buy their program. That may limit their profits.

16. Don't forget about the gasoline
we are subsidizing for five cents a gallon since that was what Saddam did and we don't want to be accused of being less generous than the odious dictator who made life so impossible for them.

For a while the "coalition" was actually having to buy the gasoline from Kuwait even though Iraq has even more oil.

4. I think the insurgents have figured out their most effective weapon.
I don't think we can stop these suicide bombers. Israel certainly had a tough time of it, and they have heavily secured borders and a functioning government and police force.

A series of attacks in Iraq have killed at least 71 people and wounded at least 133.

A car bomb exploded in a small market near a police station in Tikrit, killing at least 31 people and wounding 70, a police officer said.

Police Lieutenant-Colonel Saad Daham said when security forces prevented the attacker from exploding the vehicle in front of the station in Saddam Hussein's hometown on Wednesday, he swerved into a crowd of people at the nearby market.

It was 7.15am (0315 GMT), and many day labourers who had travelled to Tikrit from poorer areas of Iraq were waiting at the market to be picked up for work at local construction sites, Daham said

17. Reuters now has same - Four suicide attacks kill at least 71
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Four suicide bombs killed at least 71 people in Iraq on Wednesday, the latest attacks in an escalating campaign of guerrilla violence that has killed nearly 400 Iraqis since a new government was unveiled two weeks ago.

In Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, a suicide car bomber blew up his vehicle among a crowd of mainly Shi'ite migrant laborers from southern Iraq who had gathered to look for work.

Police said at least 33 people were killed and 80 wounded.

A policeman at the scene of the blast in Tikrit, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad, said the explosion was near a police station but the target was the crowd of workers.

"What I saw was a tragedy," said Ibrahim Mohammed, a migrant worker from the town of Kut who witnessed the blast. "Some people had their heads torn off by the explosion, some were burned, some were ripped to pieces."

10. Dozens die in Iraqi suicide bombings
Bombs explode in Tikrit, Baghdad and the north

Staff and agencies
Wednesday May 11, 2005

At least 57 people have been killed and more than a hundred injured by a series of suicide bomb attacks across Iraq this morning.

A man with explosives hidden under his clothes set them off while standing in a line of job applicants waiting outside a police and army recruitment center in Hawija, northern Iraq, earlier this morning, killing 30 people and wounding 35. Fifteen are said to be in a critical condition.

In Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's home town, a suicide car bomb was detonated outside a police station at 0315 GMT this morning. Police said 24 people died and 70 were wounded.

At Tikrit's general hospital, Dr Faisal Mahmoud said the facility was too small to handle so many casualties.

23. Iraqi Insurgents Go on Rampage, Kill 69
Edited on Wed May-11-05 08:24 PM by Yo_Mama_Been_Loggin
Mission accomplished?

By ALEXANDRA ZAVIS, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Suicide bombs ripped through a crowded market and a line of security force recruits Wednesday as a wave of explosions and gunfire across Iraq killed at least 69 people — pushing the death toll from insurgent violence to more than 400 in less than two weeks.

The bloody attacks, which also wounded 160 people, came despite a major U.S. offensive targeting followers of Iraq's most-wanted terrorist near the Syrian border, a remote desert region believed to be a staging ground for some of the insurgents' deadliest assaults.

The day's events underscored how intense the fight for Iraq's future has become in the scant three months since Iraqis voted in the country's first democratic elections and more than two years since the United States declared the end of major combat.

Insurgents averaged about 70 attacks a day at the start of May, up from 30-40 in February and March, said Lt. Col. Steven Boylan, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Iraq.

29. So they are all insurgents now
because it seems to be the non-Iraqi centered Al Qaeda threatened that is striking out with the suicide bombs there is no distinction between them and the Iraqi resistance?

I seem to see most people blending the patchwork into one on several points which makes it really impossible to understand what is happening. Zorro is still on the loose too.

Of course AP is a digest getting most of their news via the Pentagon view. Generally the Pentagon knows if it is targeting Sunnis, Shiites or Al Zack but apparently don't believe the distinction is important enough to make.

37. Question for those with stronger stomachs
than me. Are the freepers also posting about the increased violence in Iraq? I can't go there. I don't have the intestinal fortitude. But I wonder if the freep mentality allows them to pay attention to what has happened this month in Iraq. Attacks have doubled from previous months. Or is the massive denial still in place? Is there any awareness at all of the reality in Iraq? Or do they swallow the Bushian platitudes with their eyes closed?
Just wondering.
I notice that DUers have plenty of concern over the increased attacks. Guess we're more concerned about the troops than they are. Not really a surprise.
They're just bumper sticker patriots. Put a decal on the car with "support the troops" and drive away.
