Iraq war souvenirs charge denied as Eglin court-martial opens

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AP) -- An Air Force officer denied responsibility for shipping home AK-47 assault rifles, rocket propelled grenade launchers and other illegal souvenirs from Iraq as his court-martial began Monday at this Florida Panhandle base.

Maj. Gregory McMillion is charged with violating standing orders against bringing home such war booty, failing to report and turn over captured or abandoned property, making false statements and conduct unbecoming an officer.

"Negative," McMillion replied when a prosecutor asked if he was responsible for shipping and packing crates that contained the contraband.

At a preliminary hearing in November, investigators testified that McMillion admitted during questioning in October 2003 that he had shipped the contraband.

Other souvenirs included a dummy rocket propelled grenade (RPG) round, inert land mines, antique rifles, empty artillery shells, a pistol, a flare gun and a pair of seats from anti-aircraft artillery guns.
