Poll of Republican Voters Shows Approval of Embryonic Stem Cell Research
By David Espo
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Polling, advertising and grass-roots organizing, the pillars of a strong election campaign, now spill over routinely to congressional battles - embryonic stem cell research among them.
The embryonic stem cell issue flared during the 2004 presidential campaign and may soon come before the House. Republicans who dissent from President Bush's policy are circulating a poll designed to show they have the party's voters on their side even if many fellow GOP lawmakers are not.

The survey, taken among 800 Republican voters nationwide, showed 90 percent job approval for President Bush and 88 percent favorable support for Republicans in the House. Both levels far exceed recent results of surveys taken of voters of all political persuasions.

At the same time, 57 percent of those surveyed in the Republican-only poll said they favored embryonic stem cell research, with 40 percent opposed. On a follow-up question, 54 percent said it was more of a research issue, while 40 percent said it was more of an abortion issue.

1.  Thank you for posting this
As a parkinson sufferer and stem cell lobyist i am both encouraged by the results of this poll and sadden that so many people equate it to abortion. I mean they wont even bother to read the limitations in the bills we are introducing to protect the fetus.
I mean I want stem cell to avoid brain surgery and my concept of love thy neighbor means I would never do that to a living thinking being. Ah well I guess the holy people would rather play games with my life and see my writher in pain all day than look thru a microscope. Thank so much for posting this Danny.

2. Once Nancy Reagan jumped on the stem cell bandwagon
...the "hearts and minds" fight was all but lost. What is interesting is how stunningly tone deaf the GOP is on issues. They feel that they can pull the string, and their little puppet voters will always jump. It didn't work with the Schiavo business, either.

I hope they continue to be totally tone deaf to their constituency. It was the problem of the Democrats many years ago, when a small faction of the party was permitted far too much power in setting the total party agenda, and the moderate voices were totally crushed.

Reagan Democrats will look like a small cadre compared to Kerry or Dean (or insert your favorite Democratic party leader here) Republicans if they keep this shit up. Good. Let the pendulum swing.

3. 90% approval for Bush? Where did they take this poll?
Inside one of his "public" events where all of those entering have to swear loyalty to Bush?

6. The repubs are addicted to violence and fear
I think that's why there so wild about being pro life. (I really dispise that term) It gives them a false sense of righteousness for thier crusader mentality.

5. This is where the Dems should be. Right with our issues and things
like

1) rare abortions but great access to other reproductive right options

2) some form of national health coverage that gives monopoly power to the government to make they get the best and most cost effective private/public mix

3) transparency in markets and regulations to save lives and keep from letting some industries be subsidized by killing people & the environment (aka externalities)

4) that elite tax havens are shut down so that if the elites want to get away from sharing any burden..they will have to go into space

5) fiscally conservative government that puts its money in programs that really work great

on and on.

7. When you have the religious right as the mouthpiece to their party...
This is the reaction you get when you have an honest survey.

This is like nazi Germany in effect.

The nazi's were in power, the majority of Germans hated them, yet they did nothing to stop them.

As long as they allow the religious right to continue to be their mouth piece, the republican voters will continue to be nothing but sheep.
