25. Of course it is!!!
But ONLY when it is someone else's child making the sacrifice. When one of God's Chosen People is called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice then war takes on a whole new meaning. A favorite bumper sticker: "Support Bush's war; draft young Republicans". Bring back the draft; watch how fast the war comes to an end.

5. Isn't that only those designated KIA?
I am certain the actual number of troops who lost their lives in Iraq is much higher...but we won't be told that figure.

6. I was wondering about that, too. What about troops that are wounded
and die in the hospital a week later from their wounds?

I never hear about them, only about the troops KIA.

Matter of fact, one of the recent deaths included in the 1602 count on http://icasualties.org/oif/ is a National Guard soldier who died in Brooke Army Medical Center (Texas) after having been wounded in Iraq two weeks previous. Here's the DoD release:

http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/2005/nr20050503-2922.html

That should be enough to quash the thoroughly false claim that only troops who die in the field are counted in the 1602. But if it is not enough, go to this page

http://icasualties.org/oif/Details.aspx

Scroll to the bottom, and check out the "Place of Death" pull down menu. There are literally dozens included in the 1602 count who died in hospital after having been wounded in Iraq. The count is accurate.

10. Where will this be covered in your local paper
The last deaths were covered in a 3 inch article at the very bottom of page 4 of Asheville Citizen-Times(May 6 edition) and no mention at all on their website.

11. The public will really not begin to pay attention until it hits 2000.
For some reason I cannot explain, I do believe that will be the number that really makes them sit up and take notice.

For those of us who opposed this invasion based on lies and hubris, we don't need no steenkin' numbers to be against bush and his aggression in furtherance of the American Empire.

CNN actually spent a few seconds to report the fact that deaths have passed 1600? Now they can go back to sleep until a few weeks/months from now when it goes pass 1700.

22. How long before American deaths in Iraq outnumber 9/11 deaths?
Edited on Mon May-09-05 02:28 PM by Virginian
The number of Iraqi deaths in Iraq way outnumber 9/11. They have since early in the war.

What is the criteria for counting American deaths in Iraq. Do they have to be engaged in battle or can they die of a heart attack or thrombosis in the green zone? Edit: website above says all Americans are included in this count.

Are civilian contractors included in the death count? The beheaded civilians, are they counted? Edit: I saw a contractor stat page at website, but not sure if it was included in total, Didn't see Nick Berg.

:tinfoilhat: :tinfoilhat: :tinfoilhat: Tin foil hat time:
For those who can't believe in LIHOP or MIHOP because leaders are responsible for their citizens and wouldn't let them be killed, how many have been killed now because of Bush's illegal war. You have all read the secret memo, you know he wanted war and created the "facts" to support it. This was not a necessary war. Bush is killing Americans by sending them to a war like a child playing with little plastic army men. He has no regard for their deaths or for the ruined lives of the injured. He doesn't care about the ruined, broken families because of his little war. Yesterday was mothers' day. Do you think he cared about all the women who gave birth to these people who have come home in a box. Some of them now are no longer mothers. They have lost their only child.

He has no guilt he loses no sleep over any of this.

29. 9 days in to May the toll is already 19. 2.44 Avg per day
Highest avg death rate since December when 72 died - yeah, tell me again about that successful election. Oh and one of the Sunday guests mentioned only 1/4 of the promised Iraqi Security Forces are trained.

My guess is neocons will be declaring victory and pulling out troops in '06 whether Iraqis are ready or not. Repukes won't want troops still there and dying for the '06 American elections. Just too bad though that a bunch more American troops will be killed and maimed before then.

30. Why they died...
In reference to the the death of soldiers in the Iraq War (and all war for that matter):

Let me start out by saying, I don't want anybody to be killed. I don't condone violence/murder (state-sponsored or not) of any kind. But it seems to me if the highest morality is Do unto others as thou wouldst have done unto you, the it seems like they created their own deaths.
