Huge majority turn deaf ear to military pitches
http://kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=3315454

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sgt. 1st Class James Finney is fighting an uphill battle on the streets of Tucson. snip

"We walk around here and I guarantee you heads will turn," said Grogan, 38, as he and Finney recently worked the crowd at a job fair at the Tucson Convention Center.

When a strapping youth approached their booth, Grogan twirled this way and that, showing off his dress uniform from different angles.

"C'mon baby, look how good I look! Girls love a tall guy in a uniform," Grogan told the young prospect.

the returning troops that don't have any legs, are missing part of their brains, blinded, disfigured. Why does truth in advertizing not apply to the military?

The good news is that potential recruits are saying WTF?? NO!

The bad news? "You've been drafted".

It's just a matter of time.

..she's pretty sure he'll be ok since others in their family have come back alive. Such confidence.

oh, and about the recruiters showing off their uniforms. Soldiers also get buried in them ,don't they?

12. Getting buried in my uniform...
was one of the minor nightmares I had when I got drafted during Viet Nam.

Spending all eternity in that... Too terrible to think of.

I'm putting in my will that I don't even want that free flag veterans get.

13. But like Bush
they like war, but avoid fighting in a war at all costs. With the draft the NG was a good place to hide. Without the draft the NG is not the place to hide.

15. It sucks that they're turning these recruiters into pimps.
I'm sure Grogan was trying to be light-hearted with his "girls love a tall guy in a uniform" spin, but it must make him cringe to think how low he and his comrades have to stoop, all because of the stupidest person on the planet, george "W is for War" bush.

27. IIRC, Article In NYTimes Mentions These Guys Are Having Serious Health
issues from the stress.

And I personally don't care to belittle their suffering by trivilizing it in comparison to wounded vets.

It's not like these guys can just quit their jobs.

19. "a dip being attributed to the war in Iraq, to higher recruiting targets
and to a strong economy that gives young people more job options."

What the fuckity-fuck???? "Strong economy" my ass!

The phrase "strong economy" is used twice in the article -- what bullshit. But by mentioning economic issues, the article does of course admit the underlying truth, in a way -- that the recruiters prey on those who have no job prospects, and enlist out of desperation.

20. what I don't understand is
with 51% of the voting public supporting Bush and Iraq freedom, why aren't there enough children from the this group of people to keep the war going for awhile. Especially given that the churches (some of them) appearing to be saying that Bush is doing God's work.

Many young lives were lost that were lured into the military by the sweet lies of these scumbags. I like to see Sgt Finney dodging bullets in Iraq while wearing his Class As.

26. Soldier fiancee
As the fiancee of a deployed soldier, I can agree that when he is in his dress blues he is extremely handsome. However, his dress blues did not make the trip with him, they are in the closet with me. And I would rather see him alive in a walmart apron then dead in his dress blues. Maybe the wives and girlfriends and boyfriends of those thinking of enlisting should be allowed to ask some questions of those of us left behind to wait on word of our soldiers!

34. I almost enlisted in the Navy years ago when I was in High School
Among the other reasons why I did not:

1) I caught the recruiter lying to me. ("Oh, nobody will ever ask you to do more than 30 push-ups at a time.")

2) They couldn't find my preferred specialty on their list. It was something like "Public Information Officer" that I was looking for.

3) You only need an Associates Degree to run the nuclear reactor on a naval warship.

4) The guy who was "helping" me fill-out my forms asked me what religion I was, and I told him I was Jewish. He wrote on the form, "Jew's Churches."

It was that last one more than anything that made me decide to walk away. I said to myself, "Do I really want to entrust my life to idiots like this?"
