Iraq's oil minister vows higher output, less graft
By Michael Georgy

Iraq's new oil minister, Ibrahim Bahr al-Uloum, said on Sunday his ministry would follow a new motto in a country gripped by guerrilla bombings and sabotage of pipelines: "Fight corruption and boost production."

But the petroleum engineer did not spell out any concrete plans to reach his goals in a country plagued by sabotage attacks on crude pipelines and corruption that is endemic in many ministries.

"Our new motto in the ministry is fight corruption and boost production," said the former exile. "There are several plans. We are going to review them and we are going to announce them sometime next week."

Iraq is hoping to resume oil exports through its northern pipeline to Turkey soon. For now, all its exports are through its southern terminals on the Gulf.

2. The new Oil Minister is an AMERICAN!
That's what they said on the news this morning. I missed that part in this article? Did I hear wrong or was it accidentally left out of the story?

3. Yup. His father was an "exile" and he's a Chalabi guy.
"His political support comes from Ahmad Chalabi, the former exile who put the strongest case for "liberating" Iraq to the United States, and his father Mohammad, one of Iraq's most respected Shi'ite Muslim clerics."

10. You have to admire Chalabi
This guy is the high level grifter supreme of our era. No matter who is in charge - there he is, stuffing wads of cash into his pockets, smiling, dining at the best restaurants.

8. All corruption...
must be cleared through the office of the oil minister in advance, so that he may recieve his 'cut'. All unauthorized corruption will be severely punished.
