2. more on the story
Captured Al-Qaeda kingpin is case of ‘mistaken identity’
Christina Lamb and Mohammad Shehzad Islamabad

THE capture of a supposed Al-Qaeda kingpin by Pakistani agents last week was hailed by President George W Bush as “a critical victory in the war on terror”. According to European intelligence experts, however, Abu Faraj al-Libbi was not the terrorists’ third in command, as claimed, but a middle-ranker derided by one source as “among the flotsam and jetsam” of the organisation.
Al-Libbi’s arrest in Pakistan, announced last Wednesday, was described in the United States as “a major breakthrough” in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

Bush called him a “top general” and “a major facilitator and chief planner for the Al- Qaeda network”. Condoleezza Rice, secretary of state, said he was “a very important figure”. Yet the backslapping in Washington and Islamabad has astonished European terrorism experts, who point out that the Libyan was neither on the FBI’s most wanted list, nor on that of the State Department “rewards for justice” programme.
Al-Libbi is just a ‘middle-level’ leader,” said Jean-Charles Brisard, a French intelligence investigator and leading expert on terrorism finance. “Pakistan and US authorities have completely overestimated his role and importance. He was never more than a regional facilitator between Al-Qaeda and local Pakistani Islamic groups.”

According to Brisard, the arrested man lacks the global reach of Al-Qaeda leaders such as Ayman al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden’s number two, Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, the mastermind of the September 11 attacks, or Anas al-Liby.

3. al-Libbi "mistaken identity"...
The US intel community could fuck up a Jello sandwich! Notice the story on al-Libbi broke on a nice midweek news day, and the clarification comes on a Saturday when nobody is watching.

According to European intelligence experts, however, Abu Faraj al-Libbi was not the terrorists’ third in command, as claimed, but a middle-ranker derided by one source as “among the flotsam and jetsam” of the organisation.

Another Libyan is on the FBI list — Anas al-Liby, who is wanted over the 1998 East African embassy bombings — and some believe the Americans may have initially confused the two. When The Sunday Times contacted a senior FBI counter-terrorism official for information about the importance of the detained man, he sent material on al-Liby, the wrong man.

“Al-Libbi is just a ‘middle-level’ leader,” said Jean-Charles Brisard, a French intelligence investigator and leading expert on terrorism finance."

5. LMAO . . so they catch a guy nobody knew they were looking for,
they announce him as someone they were hunting as a top-level al qaeda leader, confuse people because he's not on any top terrorist wanted list, then follow up by saying he's a case of mistaken identity.

BUAHAHAHAHAHAHA

70. No way
this is SOP. The "Al-Qaeda" that they are trying to sell doesn't exist anyway (as a multinational organization with "sleeper cells" and so on, anyway). They have to do this every once in a while to make it look like they are actually "hunting them down". They brought Shrub out to praise it because of his miserable approval ratings I guess. Nobody hears the correction anyway.

25. They probably needed that 'breakthrough' on the day it was announced.
In any case...the % of people who will learn of the 'mistake' will not equal the number of people who paid attention to the arrest. They win with the wrong guy! How lucky can they get? Lesson 23 from their how-to book. HOW-TO FEIGN AND CHEAT WITH PLANTED AND INACCURATE NEWS OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTs AND HOW TO FLASH IT AND KEEP IT GOING: how-to announce the correction is wee little news releases and get the corporate propaganda networks to bury the correction.

Now, it gives them a chance to arrest # 3 all over again. More bonus points!

Ya know, we spend billions and billions on intelligence, and when they have a failure like this, it makes you wonder just how intelligent they really are.

Oh, I'm sure M$M will make sure this news travels as far as the mistake. :sarcasm:

a guy who has written a book about bringing BinLaden's head to Bush on ice..:D Wonder what Big Timmy will do with this latest revelation.

Imagine being told to "capture bin Laden, kill him, and bring his head back in a box." Those exact orders were given to our guest this Sunday, former Senior CIA Officer Gary Schroen. He was the CIA intelligence officer who led the first American unit into Afghanistan after September 11th. Schroen will discuss the hunt for Osama bin Laden, the recent capture of senior Al Qaeda operative Abu Farraj al-Libbi and his new book, "First In: An Insider's Account of How the CIA Spearheaded the War on Terror in Afghanistan" on this Sunday's "Meet the Press with Tim Russert."

From the times article

No European or American intelligence expert contacted last week had heard of al-Libbi until a Pakistani intelligence report last year claimed he had taken over as head of operations after Khalid Shaikh Mohammad’s arrest. A former close associate of Bin Laden now living in London laughed: “What I remember of him is he used to make the coffee and do the photocopying.”

I think they (our gov't and other gov'ts) plant stories here and abroad and I'm not even sure who they are planting them to fool. Since I don't have any means to know who tells the truth and when, I mostly don't put much stock in any of it until a lot of time passes and the story hasn't changed or I can figure out who is lying and why. I figured this story might be true when I first read it because it would make sense that Musharraf (sp?) would want captured the guy who was trying to knock him off.

They capture this random Al-Qaeda chump and brand him "third-in-charge," the media headlines with the story for a couple days, and now it turns out this Al-Libbi is merely a grunt... and the MSM is...

63. This was known days ago, but the media ignored it.
Keep in mind that the New York Times reported this in their original article on May 4, four days ago, but chose to hide it in the middle of the story in paragraphs 11 to 14, leaving the propaganda in the headline and opening 10 paragraphs of the article. None of the other major papers even reported any doubt as far as I was able to see.

from the NY Times (paras 11-13, May 4):
However, some European and Middle Eastern intelligence officials raised questions about Mr. Libbi's importance to the Qaeda organization.

Three officials said they were surprised to hear senior officials in the United States and Pakistan characterize Mr. Libbi as a highly ranked Qaeda commander. One Middle Eastern intelligence official said: "We don't have information that this man is or was the No. 3 man of Al Qaeda. This man was important for operations in Pakistan, but he is not the No. 3 man in the organization."

A senior German official suggested there may have been some confusion with Abu al-Liby, a Libyan-born senior Qaeda commander who was indicted for an "operational role" in the August 1998 bombings of two American embassies in east Africa. American officials have offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Mr. Liby's arrest. He is listed on the F.B.I.'s Most Wanted Terrorists List, while Mr. Libbi is not.

This is the Neo-crazies to a "tee". Get American hopes up that they can show the "Population" that they can still capture "high-ranking" terrorists when they want to! God, with Pakistan's help! You American's must be soooooo proud of your government! They are the best Terrorist capturer's in the world! Here in Oz our government is completely useless at capturing Terrorist's. Great at drug dealers, illegal immigrant's and foreign companies that "dump" their products!
The guy the Americans captured is useless. The real guy they need with the same surname is in Iran! Dowh!
Has anyone heard from General Mark Kimmit lately. Last we were told he had been re-deployed to Qatar.
How is Iyad Allawi going? Reports here in OZ say he was killed last week in an Iraqi Guerrilla ambush??
Reports here in Oz also reckon the Mahdi Army, newly re-armed and re-trained, is ready to take on the American Army, starting in Najaf? Shiites and Sunnis together. Its going to get hot in Iraq over Summer! for American GI's.

of triumph but not the correction. Same thing happens with retractions in newspapers - the original mistake is seen but the retraction is for all practical purposes invisible. They'll know about this travesty in the UK, but the US corporate media will move on to the next distraction du jour. And most watchers will be left with the idea of a major coup in capturing the "Third in Command."

by Christina Lamb and Mohammad Shehzad Islamabad

Yet the backslapping in Washington and Islamabad has astonished European terrorism experts, who point out that the Libyan was neither on the FBI’s most wanted list, nor on that of the State Department “rewards for justice” programme...

They blow smoke up their own asses when they don't know why they are blowing...they make statements to the public as "facts" when they never seem to have a fucking clue.

Has there ever been a more incompetent, ignorant, arrogant group of people in this world? Well, maybe Hitler and his Nazis...Chimpy and his cronies are not far behind.

112. Truth drug and beatings fail to get al-Qa'eda No 3 to talk..I wonder why?
Edited on Sun May-08-05 08:42 AM by NNN0LHI
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/05/08/walq08.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/05/08/ixworld.html

Intelligence officials who have been questioning Abu Faraj al-Libbi, the senior al-Qa'eda suspect arrested last week, have cast doubt over claims by the Pakistani prime minister, Shaukat Aziz, that the interrogation is "proceeding well".

The officials say that al-Libbi, who is believed to be al-Qaeda's number three, has defied efforts to make him reveal valuable intelligence about its senior hierarchy, despite coming under "physical pressure" to do so.

More than a dozen low-key al-Qa'eda targets were arrested in Pakistan last week thanks to information stored on al-Libbi's satellite telephone. Yet early hopes among both American and Pakistani intelligence officials that he would tell them the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawihiri, were dashed.

One senior intelligence official told The Telegraph: "So far he has not told us anything solid that could lead to the high-value targets. It is too early to judge whether he is a hard nut to crack, or simply that he doesn't know more than he has told us."

Al-Libbi had been beaten and injected with the so-called "truth drug", sodium pentothal, said the official. "They have tried all possible methods, from the 'third degree' to injecting him with a truth serum but it is hard to break him," he said.

130. Again and again...
With as many of these "kingpins" and "top lieutenants" as they've captured over the years, you'd think Al-Qaeda would have faded away.

...Or are they just more "Agents of Goldstein"?...

131. I've already heard news blurb saying
that they have gotten valuable information out of him...of course it is a Clearchannel/fox news AM station. Aside from that what freaks me out is that any and all of these captives will be tortured for interrogation purposes. Innocent or not, high level or not, some bum off the street or not. I so hate it that that is what my country has come to stand for.
